Arsenal power rankings: Rob Holding and Emile Smith Rowe on the rise, could Nicolas Pepe follow?

The international break invariably lacks the helter skelter nature of the Premier League campaign but even by the quiet standards of this early season pause there has been a notable hush around Arsenal.

Perhaps it is due to the relatively limited number of players they currently have away on international duty. Only eight of Unai Emery's first-team squad have been involved in high-profile European qualifiers and Under-21 games over the past week with many seasoned Arsenal internationals either injured (Kieran Tierney), retired (Mesut Ozil) or simply not in the frame (Alexandre Lacazette).

That will doubtless be welcomed by Emery, who will be able to drill his first team squad into shape whilst many of his rivals are scattered to the winds. However it certainly means that few of Arsenal's brightest lights have been able to press their cases for a greater role in their head coach's plans - and no less importantly in these power rankings - over the past few days.

Scroll down to see our Arsenal power rankings after a month of the new season...

24. Shkodran Mustafi

Last week: 24th

23. Konstantinos Mavropanos

Last week: 23rd

22. Emiliano Martinez

Last week:  22nd - The Argentina is yet to feature this season but his chance is coming and the next few weeks could tell us a lot about how significant a role Martinez can be relied upon to play.

Arsene Wenger not ruling out leading a team at next World Cup

September will bring the start of the Europa League campaign as well as an EFL Cup tie at home to Nottingham Forest. Martinez decided to stay at Arsenal because he was assured regular game time and given the hope that if he performed well enough he might be able to seriously challenge Bernd Leno.

Now is the time to find out whether Arsenal will live up to those promises.

21. Calum Chambers

Last week: 20th

20. Gabriel Martinelli

Last week: 19th

19. Emile Smith Rowe

Last week: 21st - With the groin injury that spoiled most of 2019 beginning to fade Smith Rowe is starting to remind Arsenal of just what a special talent he is.

The 19-year-old has started all four of Steve Bould's games for Arsenal Under-23s, scoring one goal and earning a nomination for August's Premier League 2 Player of the Month. However it won't be long before Smith Rowe is part of Emery's plans, he is expected to resume first team training over the international break and is likely to feature in cup competitions over the coming weeks.

18. Reiss Nelson

Last week:  18th

17. Mesut Ozil

Last week: 17th

16. Sead Kolasinac

Last week: 16th

15. Joe Willock

Last week: 14th  - The energetic midfielder might have missed out on selection for the north London derby but he had done plenty before then to dramatically improve his standing within the Arsenal squad.

Unfortunately injury denied Willock the chance to feature with the England Under-21s and offer a further reminder to Gareth Southgate of his significant talents. However the calf inflammation that forced him out of international duty is not thought to be serious and he could well be involved against Watford on Sunday.

14. Rob Holding

Last week: 15th  - The young centre-back's performances with the U23s have won rave reviews and it will not be long before he returns to the senior side, with Europa League and EFL Cup games viewed as the ideal opportunity to reintroduce Holding to the Arsenal squad.

His standing has risen dramatically in the nine months he has spent on the sidelines and Holding will require patience as he readjusts to the Premier League. However if David Luiz and Sokratis Papastathopoulos continue to make high-profile blunders Emery may not be able to afford his returning defender all that much time to ease himself in.

13. David Luiz

Last week: 13th

12. Granit Xhaka

Last week:  12th

11. Ainsley Maitland-Niles

Last week: 11th - It has been an impressive enough start to the season for Maitland-Niles but what comes in the weeks after Hector Bellerin returns to the team, which is likely to be next month, should tell us a great deal more about the 22-year-old's standing at Arsenal.

Maitland-Niles would admit he is no natural right-back but will he serve as Bellerin's understudy when the Spaniard is back in the side and largely find himself confined to the Europa League and EFL Cup? That would be harsh indeed on a player whose natural role is central midfield and who could bring a dynamism to the middle of the pitch.

10. Kieran Tierney

Last week: 10th

9. Sokratis Papasthopoulos

Last week: 9th

8. Dani Ceballos

Last week: 8th

7. Lucas Torreira

Last week: 7th

6. Hector Bellerin

Last week: 6th

5. Nicolas Pepe

Last week: 5th - Still without a goal so far in his Arsenal tenure there have still been plenty of encouraging flashes from the club record signing, including an assist in the north London derby.

However there is an acceptance at Arsenal and within the Ivory Coast national setup that a player who was heavily involved until the final of the Africa Cup of Nations could do with a break. As such both club and country agreed that Pepe should sit out the country's upcoming fixtures and work on his fitness at London Colney.

It is to be hoped that an international break focused on building fitness for the Premier League will allow Pepe to hit even greater heights when the competition resumes.

4. Alexandre Lacazette

Last week:  4th

3. Bernd Leno

Last week: 3rd

2. Matteo Guendouzi

Last week: 2nd

1. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

Last week: 1st
