Arsenal 'pondering swoop' for Argentina defender Walter Kannemann

Arsenal are reportedly pondering making a move for Argentina defender Walter Kannemann.

The 28-year-old is currently playing for Gremio in Brazil and is attracting attention from a clutch of European clubs.

His form has caught the eye of the national team and he was drafted into the squad this season.

Arsenal will need to fight competition from other English sides as well as Atletico Madrid, whose boss Diego Simeone worked with Kannemann at San Lorenzo.

Kannemann is a naturally left-sided centre-half and is understood to have a buyout clause of just over £10million.

Unai Emery is keen to bolster his backline in the summer following uncertainty surrounding his current defence.

Shkodran Mustafi has come in for criticism recently while Laurent Koscielny has had injury problems and turns 34 in September.

Kannemann's international teammate Nicolas Tagliafico is another defender on their radar.

Meanwhile, the Gunners are also said to be monitoring Ander Herrera's situation at Manchester United .

The Spanish midfielder had been expected to agree fresh terms at Old Trafford but is yet to put pen to paper on a new contact and could leave the Red Devils at the end of the season.

Arsenal are hopeful of regaining their place at Europe's top table next season and currently occupy the fourth and final Champions League spot.

They are just a point behind north London rivals Tottenham but sit only two points in front of Manchester United and three ahead of Chelsea .
