Alex Iwobi has agreed a new contract at Arsenal, the club are expected to confirm. The attacking midfielder has started in four of Arsenal’s last five matches in all competitions and he has scored in the previous two – the Premier League victories over Watford and Everton.
Arsène Wenger has indicated that talks to reward Iwobi have been ongoing and the 19-year-old is poised to sign on improved terms until 2021. Iwobi signed his previous deal only last October but the upward trajectory of his career has been steep.
He joined Arsenal as an eight-year-old and Wenger has said that, for many years, he was not a player who might have stood out in training. But Iwobi has taken significant strides of late. Involved with the first-team squad since the beginning of the season, he made his debut at Sheffield Wednesday in the Capital One Cup defeat last October and he now has a total of 15 appearances to his name.
Wenger has talked of Iwobi’s mobility and fearlessness, and how he is steeped in the ways of the club having come up through the ranks from a young age. Iwobi, who was born in Lagos and moved to England as a young child, has also become a full Nigeria international.
