Arsenal player ratings vs Lyon: Nelson, Willock superb, Ceballos tidy as Gunners are beaten

Arsenal suffered defeat against Lyon at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

After looking so comfortable in the first half, the Gunners switched off to allow Moussa Dembele to score twice and gift the Ligue 1 outfit the Emirates Cup.

Here's how we rated the Arsenal players.

Bernd Leno - Will probably blame his outfield teammates for the two goals he conceded in the second half. Made a good fingertip save against Depay but otherwise didn’t have too much to deal with. 6

Ainsley Maitland-Niles - Supported the attacking play from right back well, especially during the first half. Seems destined to start the season at right back again. 6

Calum Chambers - Returning from his loan season at Fulham, where he played most games as a midfielder, Chambers will be annoyed that he didn’t pick up Dembele in the box for Lyon’s first goal. That said, he kept Depay quiet in the first half. 6

Sokratis - Back in the starting lineup after his red card against Real Madrid last week. Still a preferable option to Mustafi. 6

Nacho Monreal - Despite Arsenal’s rather public pursuit of Kieran Tierney, Monreal showed today why he still has a part to play at the club. At 33, the left back continues to offer a wealth of experience both defensively and going forward. 7

Matteo Guendouzi - Playing his first game of pre-season, having been at the U21 Euros with France, Guendouzi completed the first half for Arsenal. Put in a steady shift and looked as if he had never been away. 6

Granit Xhaka - Played the full 90 minutes as captain. Looked tidy to begin with and tried to rally his team late on to find an equaliser, picking out Aubameyang with a particularly nice pass. 6

Henrikh Mkhitaryan - Had a busy first half and got the crucial cross for Aubameyang’s opener. Could’ve scored himself with a decent volley. 7

Joe Willock - With Mesut Ozil rested following last week’s armed robbery incident, Willock started at number 10 for Arsenal. The 19-year-old already looks wiser than his years and was comfortable and creative throughout the first half. 8

Alexandre Lacazette - Had one shot before being subbed off for Reiss Nelson after just 13 minutes. The striker was down early on and got some attention on his foot from the physio, before coming back on. Hopefully just a precautionary measure from Emery. N/A

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang - Started on the right wing and then shifted to striker when Lacazette came off. His goal was a typical finish in the six-yard box, getting his foot on the end of Mkhitaryan’s cross. It was also encouraging how well he linked up with Nelson and Willock, given they have spent relatively few minutes on the pitch together. 7

Subs

Dani Ceballos - Making his first appearance in an Arsenal shirt, Ceballos showed glimpses of what we can expect this season. He has neat control, dribbling and distribution - there was just simply not enough time left for it to make any real difference. 6

Dani Ceballos Profile

Shkodran Mustafi - Was a late sub and put in one important tackle on Dembele. 5

Reiss Nelson - Coming on for Lacazette, Nelson did very well today. He hit the ground running and was a constant presence with Willock in Arsenal’s attacking play.

Following last season’s blooding in the Bundesliga on loan at Hoffenheim, Nelson is showing that he can have a real impact for Arsenal this coming year. 8

Carl Jenkinson - Didn’t have enough to get into the game. 5

Eddie Nketiah - Played up front for the whole second half and lead the line well with Aubameyang. Nketiah had a successful pre-season tour in the US and more chances fell his way.

He seems to have won over the home fans, with the Emirates’ North Bank chanting his name at one point. 7

Gabriel Martinelli - Had the ball in the back of the net but the goal was disallowed. In the heat of the moment it was a good poacher’s finish and Martinelli raises some interesting questions about what he can add to the squad this season. 6

Robbie Burton - Wasn’t afraid to ask for the ball from his older teammates when he came on late in the second half. Burton’s emergence this summer has been a nice surprise. 5

Tyreece John-Jules - Managed to have one attempt on goal after coming off the bench. Would probably have preferred to have been playing in Nketiah’s position as a more central striker. 5

Zech Medley - Came on as a left back, but really he should be playing centrally. 5
