Arsenal player ratings: Granit Xhaka and Shkodran Mustafi impress but they can't save Unai Emery

Emiliano Martinez: The Argentine could do nothing about the stunning strike from Daichi Kamara that brought Frankfurt level nor the winner. The saves he did make were rather impressive; he deserves little blame for this result. 6

Calum Chambers: He may have brought energy to the right flank but Chambers was not always as careful in possession, gifting it to Frankfurt all too often. 4

Shkodran Mustafi: In his programme notes Emery indicated that if Mustafi continued on his current trajectory he could be in line for further opportunities and the German certainly did his cause no harm today with an aggressive, proactive display that continued even as he battled an ankle injury. 7

Sokratis Papastathopoulos: His own decline mirrors that of Arsenal's in Emery's second season. A player that at his best is assertive and powerful looked helpless as Frankfurt grew in belief, making clumsy mistakes in possession. 3

Kieran Tierney: A disappointing display from a player who has already shown great quality in an Arsenal shirt. It perhaps says more about Emery's tactics than Tierney that he simply did not seem to know whether to push up in support of Bukayo Saka or stay back and quell Manuel Da Costa. 4

David Luiz: The first 10 minutes brought a rather bright start from Luiz in a defensive midfield role but a collision with a Frankfurt player that left him clutching his chest in pain seemed to dramatically curtail his effectiveness, forcing him out of the contest after 31 minutes. 5

James Benge: It is becoming a matter of when, not if, Emery loses his job

Granit Xhaka: There seemed to be a willingness from the few fans here to welcome Xhaka back into the fold after the events of the past month and, against limited opposition, he responded with one of his better performances this season.

Not only was Xhaka's passing precise but he was a valuable shield in front of the backline, winning his fair share of tackles. It was notable that as his efficacy was hindered by an ankle injury so Arsenal looked more like the team they were when he was out. 7

Gabriel Martinelli: Stood out amid the gloom of the first half as a constant goal threat, darting into areas where he could pounce on the not infrequent mistakes of the Frankfurt backline. Indeed he led his side with four tackles when he was withdrawn. Twice in the first half he pounced on promising opportunities only to be denied at close range.

His impact decreased in the second half but he still would have felt harshly done by to be replaced by Ozil. 7

Joe Willock: If he is not showing the dynamic best he displayed earlier in the season this was at least a step in the right direction after his recent struggles. After a slow start he ably linked play between the midfield and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang whilst also looking to drive into space beyond and commit the Frankfurt defence with direct dribbling. 6

Bukayo Saka: The difference between the Saka who burst onto the scene the last time these two sides met and now is that the youngster no longer seems as decisive as he once was. Where he previously moved the ball with purpose now he seemed to need a moment to set himself, to make a call that was once instinctive.

There were still flashes of his best qualities, including an assist for Aubameyang, but in all likelihood a period of outclassing opponents in the Under-23s might be just what the 18-year-old needs. 5

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang: After weeks where he had been starved of service you could forgive Aubameyang if he were a little rusty when a chance finally came his way just before the interval. Nothing of the sort, a perfectly-timed low drive deflecting off goalkeeper Frederik Rannow and into the roof of the net.

That aside this was another game where Aubameyang was left largely on his own to try to eke something out of meager service. 6

Matteo Guendouzi (sub, Luiz, 31'): The youngster looked like what he is, a player of whom an awful lot has been asked. Only Aubameyang has played more minutes in all competitions this season so it was perhaps little wonder that Guendouzi seemed to be a yard slower than normal. 5

Mesut Ozil (sub, Martinelli, 60'): What could he possible have done with so little service? 5

Lucas Torreira (sub, Mustafi, 76'): A change that typifies the fear with which Emery manages. His side were chasing an equaliser and on came a defensive midfielder with Alexandre Lacazette and Nicolas Pepe confined to the bench. 5
