Arsenal planning to welcome fans back to the Emirates for Europa League clash vs Rapid Vienna

Arsenal are aiming to get 2,000 fans back inside Emirates Stadium for Thursday's Europa League match against Rapid Vienna, football.london understands.

The Government's new tier system was confirmed on Thursday morning, with London placed in Tier 2 once the second lockdown is lifted on Wednesday, December 2.

Under Government rules, 2,000 home fans will be allowed inside any stadium which is located in a Tier 2 district from Thursday onwards, for at least two weeks, when the tiers will be reviewed once more.

Arsenal are away to fierce north London rivals Tottenham on the weekend of December 5, with their next home game against Burnley on December 13.

The Gunners could have waited until then to put plans in place for fans to return to the Emirates, but football.london understands the club are keen to have supporters in the ground for the Europa League clash with Rapid Vienna on Thursday.

Gunners boss Mikel Arteta revealed before Arsenal's match with Molde that the late notice in which the restrictions have been announced make it a "challenge" for the club to get ready in time, although it's understood they remain optimistic of putting everything in place for the game on December 3.

What do you make of the new tiering system? have you say in our survey above and in the comments below.

"It would depend where we are in terms of the infections but it looks like we're going to be able to host some of our fans in the stadium which is fantastic news.

"We have been working really hard as a club, the club has a really good project and everything is almost ready to try to accommodate everybody in a safe way.

"There are still some details that are not confirmed that makes next week a challenge but the club is trying its best because myself, the players and the staff are all desperate to have them back watching the games."

London was placed in Tier 2 under the new rules, with only the Isle of Wight and Cornwall placed in Tier 1, which would have allosed 4,000 fans to be in the stadium.

Should Arsenal's supporters not be allowed to attend their Europa League clash against Rapid Vienna, they could return to the Emirates Stadium for the first time on December 13 when they host Burnley.
