Arsenal old boy backing Tottenham to join Gunners in Premier League title race

Former Arsenal and Manchester United defender Mikael Silvestre believes Tottenham Hotspur can join the Gunners in challenging for the Premier League title this season.

Everton are the early front runners after an unbeaten start which has seen them claim 13 points from five matches. Aston Villa are second with four wins out of four - and the only remaining 100% record in the division plus, surprisingly, the best defence in the division.

Reigning champions Liverpool are third, just ahead of fourth-placed Leicester City. Arsenal are fifth - only trailing Leicester on goal difference - having taken nine points from their opening five league fixtures.

Tottenham 3-3 West Ham: Jose Mourinho post-match press conference

Arch-rivals Spurs are just a point behind in sixth after their dramatic 3-3 draw with West Ham United, in which they saw a three-goal lead slip away inside the final 10 minutes but did show evidence of their awesome attacking ability.

With Gareth Bale still to be fully introduced, having made a late cameo against the Hammers, should the Welshman perform at an elite level that could significantly improve Jose Mourinho's side.

Former Spurs manager Harry Redknapp claimed last week that Bale's arrival could propel Spurs into joining champions Liverpool and Manchester City as title contenders and Silvestre believes Mourinho's men are capable of mounting a credible challenge.

“It is too early to see who will be there at the end in the title race," said Silvestre, speaking exclusively to 888Sport.

"But it will be a stronger top six because clubs who have had a bad year don’t tend to have a second bad year.

"It is exciting to see we will have Arsenal and Spurs and (Manchester) City and Liverpool involved in the race. Everton also. It is very good for the fans to see these big clubs with so much quality fighting."
