Arsenal news: Xhaka decision, triple injury boost, Mourinho on Lacazette and Emery's 10 issues

Arsenal went into the second international break of the season sitting a point behind reigning champions Manchester City in the Premier League table.

However, following a defeat at Sheffield United and a 2-2 draw against Crystal Palace they've not only lost ground on Pep Guardiola's side, but have also slipped out of the top four.

Then on Wednesday night they crashed out of the Carabao Cup after losing 5-4 on penalties against Liverpool.

Next up for Unai Emery's side is a big game against Wolverhampton Wanderers this afternoon.

Having taken one point from a possible six against Wolves last season, this is a chance for the north London outfit to gain a measure of revenge on Nuno Espirito Santo's side and for Emery to ease some of the growing fan pressure.

With that said, here's all the news from around the Emirates Stadium over the past 24 hours.

Xhaka decision

Granit Xhaka will not feature for Arsenal against Wolves this afternoon.

Emery confirmed this when speaking to the media during his pre-match press conference.

"We were waiting for his statement on Monday ahead of the last press conference here on Tuesday," Emery said. "The next step is tomorrow's match.

"The focus is tomorrow's match. It's not in my mind that he will play tomorrow. It's not in my mind that he will play tomorrow.

"He's not in my mind. I think that tomorrow, he is not going to play."

Triple injury boost

Whilst Xhaka is not under consideration for the Wolves game, that's not the case for three of his teammates.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Joe Willock and Sead Kolasinac have all recovered from minor problems and will be available to face Wolves.

The trio sustained knocks during the League Cup defeat against Liverpool on Wednesday night and were seen heavily limping through the mixed zone after the match.

But speaking at his press conference, Emery did not mention any injury problems to trio, and they are set to be included in the matchday squad.

Mourinho makes Lacazette claim

Jose Mourinho is reportedly keen on the Arsenal job, and has previously spoken about how he would get the best out of the Frenchman.

Speaking as a Sky Sports pundit after Arsenal's 2-2 draw with Tottenham in September, Mourinho said Emery had several possibilities to best utilise Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Lacazette and Nicolas Pepe.

"I think they are very good players and normally they should be on the pitch all three together," he said. "I think Aubameyang probably he likes to play in the middle because he feels if he’s in the middle he can score more goals.

"But maybe he can score as many goals playing on the left. What happens at Liverpool is [Roberto] Firmino drops back, drops in between the lines, and then he gives more space for [Mohamed] Salah and [Sadio] Mane to attack these diagonals.

"I would see Aubameyang playing on that left side of Liverpool and scoring a lot of goals.

"At Arsenal, Lacazette doesn’t have that quality, but they have two options. One is to play, instead of like today with three midfield players almost in a straight line, to play how they played in the last 10 or 20 minutes with two [sitting midfielders] and one No.10 that can feed the three without bringing Lacazette in between the lines."

10 issues Arsenal must solve to achieve success

10 games into the new season and already battle lines are drawn at Arsenal.

A growing number of supporters want Unai Emery gone, there is doubt over whether club captain Granit Xhaka can remain in the job and there are looming doubts over the future of key players such as Mesut Ozil and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Meanwhile on the pitch the Gunners have a mere 16 points from their first 10 league games meaning at their current trajectory they are on course to earn nine points fewer than they did in Emery's first term.
