Arsenal news: Tierney's return date, Ceballos' injury boost and more transfers to be done

The transfer window is firmly shut and attention now turns to the return of the Premier League.

Arsenal travel to Newcastle United on Sunday afternoon for the clash at St James' Park, and will hopefully be showcasing a number of their new stars.

But there's still plenty going on as preparations for that game get underway.

Here's the main news from the Emirates Stadium from the last 24 hours.

When Kieran Tierney could make his Arsenal debut

Arsenal supporters are looking forward to seeing new signing Kieran Tierney in action.

The left-back's move from Celtic was officially confirmed on Thursday afternoon, making him the fifth of six new arrivals at the Emirates Stadium so far this summer.

The Gunners are back in action on Sunday as they face Newcastle United in the first game of their 2019/2020 Premier League campaign.

But is Tierney in contention to make his Arsenal bow at St James' Park?

Well, the answer is no.

This is because the Scotland international is still recovering from a double hernia operation which kept him out of Celtic's pre-season and Champions League qualifiers this summer.

After the trip to Tyneside, the Gunners face Burnley at home, Liverpool away and have the small matter of the north London derby against Spurs early next month in the final game before the first international break of the season.

But following confirmation that Tierney is hoping to resume full training in 4-6 weeks, it's looking likely that his debut won't come until September.

Whenever that first appearance takes place for Tierney, Arsenal fans are going to love seeing him in action.

More transfer business to come

Unai Emery has said he expects to trim his Arsenal squad further before the end of the European transfer window this month.

As football.london reported yesterday, Shkodran Mustafi and Mohamed Elneny have been made available to clubs on the continent after Arsenal failed to secure deals for either player before the Premier League market closed on Thursday.

Emery did not confirm which players in particular were leaving but did say, when asked about his potential new captains for the season: " We were changing players at the last moment.

"We had with Laurent Koscielny the first captain but just five days ago he left. Other players were coming in, we finished our market but it is at the moment open in other countries.

"In the next 20-25 days some players will leave. It’s the reason, I want to close our squad clearly."

Arsenal handed Dani Ceballos injury boost

Arsenal and Unai Emery have been handed a massive injury boost ahead of this weekend's Premier League clash against Newcastle United.

Loan signing Dani Ceballos emerged as a doubt after being on the receiving end of a kick from Barcelona defender Clement Lenglet in the Gunners' final pre-season fixture last weekend.

Speaking after the 2-1 loss at the Camp Nou, Emery delivered a rather concerning update.

"My idea was to play Ceballos for about 20 minutes," Emery told reporters.

"He was very sore after Lenglet’s kick and he can’t train for the next few days."

But it would appear that the Spanish midfielder has recovered from the knock and should be able to take his place in the squad which travels to Tyneside for Sunday's 2pm kick-off.
