Arsenal news: Sanllehi told to make Aubameyang decision, behind the scenes in Greece, duo return

It's matchday for Arsenal as they host Everton in the Premier League.

The Gunners are in decent form heading into the game in north London, they're unbeaten across all competitions so far in 2020 and beat Olympiacos in the Europa League last time out.

Victory over a Toffees side who are two points above them in the table is crucial as Mikel Arteta's side are still in with a chance of sealing a return to the Champions League next season via their league position.

As things stand, Manchester City won't be competing in the tournament in 2020/21 because of a ban which means the team which finishes fifth stand to benefit from this extreme punishment.

Following Tottenham Hotspur's defeat against Chelsea yesterday afternoon, Arsenal can move to within three points of their bitter rivals should they overcome Everton in the penultimate Premier League fixture of the weekend.

Football.london will have all the build up to the game and with that said, here's all the news from around the Emirates Stadium over the past 24 hours.

Gunners urged to make Aubameyang decision

Nigel Winterburn has called on his former club to make a firm decision on Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang ahead of the summer transfer window.

The Arsenal captain, who was linked with a move to Barcelona in the January transfer window, will have just over a year left on his contract when the season concludes which means the risk is that he could leave on a free in the summer of 2021.

Unsurprisingly, Winterburn feels the Gunners' decision makers such as Edu and Raul Sanllehi must tie Aubameyang to a new deal or cash in on the Gabon international.

"I hope [Pierre-Emerick] Aubameyang will be an Arsenal player next season but they have a decision to make," he said, speaking to GentingBet (18+ BeGambleAware). "Arsenal have never been a big spending club. His contract’s up next season and they’re not going to let someone run down their contract again, although they’ve got little opportunity if he wants to do that.

"If the indication is that he’s not going to sign, they may have to take the opportunity and say 'right, we’re going to take £40 million or whatever'. I don’t think they’re going to get £70 million or £80 million that they’re talking about with a year left for a player that’s coming to 31 years of age.

"For me, it’s more important whether the player wants to stay, who comes calling in the summer, and do Arsenal take the risk or can they convince him to sign a new contract?  At the moment, it’s so difficult to call."

Arsenal's top-four hopes assessed

Winterburn has also been speaking about his old club's chances of finishing in the top-four/five this season following an upturn in form under new head coach Mikel Arteta.

"If fifth was available and then that got you into the Champions League, I think Arsenal will have an outside chance," he said, speaking to GentingBet( 18+ BeGambleAware).

"However, there are a lot of teams ahead of them that are going to have to drop points, or Arsenal are going to have to go on an unbelievable run.

"Do I see that happening at the moment? I don’t know whether I do, because to do that, Arsenal are going to have to win a significant amount of games, and we’ve already showed that at times we’re a bit vulnerable and we’re more likely to draw.

"So, just keep progressing in terms of your form. We want to see some foundations for next season and then look to go a long way in the competitions this season; FA Cup and Europa League.  After all, the Europa League gets you back into the Champions League.

"So, we’ve got to go deep into those competitions and keep taking a step up the league week by week. Let’s see when we get towards the end of the season, if fifth is open for Champions League, how close are we going to be coming into the last three games or so."

Behind the scenes in Greece

As mentioned above, Arsenal were 1-0 winners over Olympiacos on Thursday night.

Alexandre Lacazette scored the only goal of the game late in the second half which puts the Gunners in the driving seat ahead of he Europa League round of 32 secong leg tie next week.

We saw plenty of action in the 1-0 win over the Greek side, but what goes into a European trip for a club like Arsenal?

Team news

Lucas Torreira and Mesut Ozil are available for Arsenal's Premier League encounter against Everton.

Both players missed the 1-0 Europa League round of 32 first-leg win over Olympiacos in midweek for differing reasons.

The defensive midfielder didn't travel to Greece because of illness, while the attacking midfielder - who scored in last weekend's 4-0 win over Newcastle United - also stayed behind in London as his wife is due to give birth.

But both are in contention to start against the Toffees in a double boost for head coach Mikel Arteta.

As revealed via the club's official website, Torreira and Ozil are listed as "available for selection" ahead of the game in north London and it just remains to be seen if they're restored to the line up.

However, the Gunners do have concerns over Hector Bellerin and Sokratis Papastathopoulos.
