Arsenal news: Mikel Arteta sent warning as Youri Tielemans transfer tactic becomes clear

Arsenal appear set to use the same transfer tactic that helped them land Martin Odegaard and Aaron Ramsdale last summer in their pursuit of Leicester City's Youri Tielemans.

The two Arsenal stars joined the club as part of Mikel Arteta's £150million squad overhaul alongside the likes of Nuno Tavares, Albert Sambi Lokonga, Ben White and Takehiro Tomiyasu. But the Gunners did not rush in with bids for the duo straight away – and they may be biding their time before bidding for Tielemans now as well.

It comes as Mikel Arteta has been warned that new signing Gabriel Jesus will not challenge the likes of Harry Kane, Son Heung-min, Mohamed Salah and Erling Haaland for the Golden Boot award next season. And the Gunners have confirmed their squad numbers for the 2022/23 season with two stars handed new digits.

Here are Mirror Football's latest Arsenal headlines.

Tielemans transfer tactic becomes clear

Arsenal seem to be biding their time before making a move for Leicester City's Youri Tielemans.

The Belgian midfielder has just one year left on his contract at the King Power Stadium and the Foxes appear set on losing him. And Arsenal are willing to run the clock down in the hope of reducing his transfer fee towards the end of the window – just as they did with Martin Odegaard and Aaron Ramsdale last summer.

On both occasions the club maintained their composure and skillfully carried out their plan by delaying placing bids until the very last moments of the window.

Arteta sent warning

Liverpool legend Phil Thompson has warned Mikel Arteta that his new signing Gabriel Jesus will not be among the Premier League's top goalscorers next season.

The Gunners boss made Jesus his number one target this summer as he looked to replace Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette in his attack. But Thompson has warned not to expect too much out of Arsenal's new forward, who he expects to get "between 12 and 15 Premier League goals" next term.

And, according to the Anfield icon, Jesus will not be challenging the likes of Harry Kane, Son Heung-min, Mohamed Salah and Erling Haaland for next season's Golden Boot.

Squad numbers confirmed

Arsenal have handed new shirt numbers to two players after confirming their list for next season.

Gabriel Martinelli will swap his No.35 for the prestigious No.11, while Eddie Nketiah has dropped No.30 in favour of No.14. The club's new signings have also officially been handed their shirt number, with Gabriel Jesus to wear No.9 while Fabio Vieira will sport the No.21.

Marquinhos and backup goalie Matt Turner were given the numbers 27 and 30. The other shirts that remain unclaimed include No.12, No.24, No.28, No.29, and No.31.
