Arsenal news: Layvin Kurzawa transfer hint, Nicolas Pepe warning, Shkodran Mustafi's future

It is matchday for Arsenal as the Gunners welcome Sheffield United to the Emirates Stadium.

Mikel Arteta's men will be looking to maintain their unbeaten start to 2020 in all competitions, having won against Manchester United in the Premier League and then beaten Leeds United in the FA Cup, before a 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace last weekend.

But the Gunners will be without top scorer Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for the visit of the Blades as the striker begins a three-match suspension following his red card in the draw at Selhurst Park.

Arteta will have a couple of changes to make for the game against Sheffield United, with Aubameyang suspended and Sead Kolasinac sidelined through injury.

Arsenal boss Arteta calls on players to fill Aubameyang’s shoes

Below, we take a look at the latest Arsenal news ahead of the game.

Layvin Kurzawa's transfer hint

There are now less than two weeks left in the January transfer window - and Arsenal are yet to sign a player this month..

But fans are hoping that will soon change, with the Gunners being strongly linked with Paris Saint-Germain defender Layvin Kurzawa.

The French left-back is out of contract at the end of the season and football.london understands that Arsenal are in talks with PSG over a deal to sign the defender this month, with French outlet L'Equipe reporting that PSG have told Arsenal that they want a fee of between €5 million to €7 million in order to let Kurzawa go now.

In another interesting development, Kurzawa confirmed on social media on Friday that he has joined the agency Sports Invest UK.

The Paris Saint-Germain defender will be represented by the company which is headed up by Kia Joorabchian, the agent with close links to Arsenal and in particular, technical director Edu Gaspar.

His social media post got Arsenal fans talking, with some Gunners fans believing that a transfer is imminent.

Charlie Nicholas issues warning to Nicolas Pepe

It has not been an easy transition to English football for Arsenal's club record signing Nicolas Pepe.

The 24-year-old has shown flashes of his brilliance but has largely been ineffective, scoring just three times in 19 Premier League matches.

And former Arsenal forward Charlie Nicholas has laid down the gauntlet by challenging the Ivory Coast international in the absence of top scorer Aubameyang.

"Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is out and quite rightly, so, there is no debate about that, but Arsenal can adjust," Nicholas told Sky Sports.

"They need more from Nicolas Pepe, but Alexandre Lacazette can turn it around for them and Mikel Arteta can ask him to be in the penalty box more.

"Arsenal are only seven points above the drop zone, and I do not see that materialising but they are closer to that than they are to Chelsea."

Martin Keown delivers Shkodran Mustafi verdict

Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown believes Arsenal Shkodran Mustafi could still have a future with the Gunners, despite speculation over his future.

The German international has been linked with a move away after finding his opportunities limited this season, with Turkish side Galatasaray among the clubs reportedly interested in signing him.

But he has featured twice since Mikel Arteta took charge, and the Spaniard has insisted that there have been no discussions about leaving.

"We haven’t talked about this internally, but I have known him since my time when I was at Everton. I know what he can do. I know the history at this football club, but it is up to him," the Spaniard said when asked about Mustafi's future.

And following Mustafi's recent interview with Arsenal's website about how he deals with criticism after being made a scapegoat by some fans following some high-profile mistakes, Keown believes the German can still turn things around in north London.

“We know that he has made mistakes, there is no doubt about that," he said, speaking on Talksport.

“I think this is a good move from Arsenal. I think he can be a proper defender. He had no real protection in the system they were playing.

“He made an alarming amount of mistakes. He is maybe doing it a different way and creating a pathway for him to come back.

“He can never allow what happened at the beginning of this season, and last season, to happen again.

“He made glaring mistakes. All of these things start to affect you and it is about rebuilding. If he comes in now, he has to relish that and enjoy that, and he can’t make mistakes.

“Can he slot in? I think it is a big ask. I think they are trying to work with him. If he performs this is a massive turnaround, but I hope he does get the support to slot him back into that unit.

“We have seen it with David Luiz. Arsenal now look much better defensively, but can he come back in? We will have to wait and see.
