Arsenal news: Jamie Carragher issues title dig as Kyle Walker addresses Gunners 'hiccups'

It may have on the cards for a while, but Arsenal's hopes of landing a first Premier League title for 19 years are officially over for another season.

Mikel Arteta's men were beaten 1-0 away at Nottingham Forest on Saturday evening, which in turn meant they could no longer catch Pep Guardiola's side. While few predicted Arsenal would finish as high as second befoer a ball had been kicked this season, to lead the league for so long only to come second means morale is low around the Emirates.

Arsenal have just one game left this term in the form of a home clash against Wolves, where the message will surely be to end this stellar season on a high note despite missing out on the ultimate prize.

With that in mind, here are some of the main Arsenal headlines on Monday, May 22.

Carragher claims Arsenal have blown the title

Jamie Carragher has claimed that Arsenal blew their title chances and declared that their points tally was not one they could expect to win the league with.

"Arsenal could end up with 84, so even though we say they're unlucky, they've done all they can, it's not a great total when we talk about really pushing someone to the line. Liverpool got in the mid-90s and still didn't win the league. You've got to get 90-plus," he told Sky Sports.

"I do have to go back and think how often will Arsenal be in a position where they're eight points clear with 10 games to go. It was an amazing position and they did blow it, we can't deny it.

"They've had an amazing season but if they're in that position next season I'd be very surprised, ahead of a quality of team like Man City."

Walker sends Arsenal message

City right-back Kyle Walker has given the Gunners credit for the way they pushed his side throughout the season but did concede Arsenal have had their 'hiccups'.

Speaking in the aftermath of Forest's win which secured City's status as champions, Walker told City's official website: "Arsenal pushed us right to the limit they’ve been fantastic, so all credit to them.

"But we just went on an incredible run, they had a few hiccups and we capitalised on it and we’ve managed to end up where we have now."

Arsenal break unwanted record

To add to all the Arsenal misery, the Gunners now have an unwanted piece of Premier League history attached to their name.

They have led for 93 per cent of the season, a new top-flight record for the longest amount of time a team has been top of the pile and NOT won the title.

To make matters worse, it's their own previous marker that they've broken.

Back in the 2002/03 season under Arsene Wenger, the Gunners led for 71 per cent of season before eventually being caught by Manchester United.
