Arsenal news: Gunners hero announces retirement as Edu looks to repeat Vieira transfer trick

Here is your Arsenal morning digest for Wednesday, August 17.

Monreal retirement

Former Arsenal defender Nacho Monreal, who plied his trade in north London between 2013 and 2019, has officially announced his retirement from football. Writing on his Instagram, the Spaniard said: "36 years playing football. 16 as a professional.

"Squeezing my body and taking it to limits that I would never have imagined. My knee sends me a message… loud and clear; I cannot continue! Do I get mad? NO! I listen to it and accept the situation and thank it for everything.

"A stage is over. Another starts. I'm happy and feeling good. One more time… I FEEL GOOD!!!

"And that gives me peace of mind. Life is a gift and I like to be grateful. Thank you @caosasuna @rfef @malagacf @arsenal @realsociedad for letting me cross your paths. What a good years…."

Edu plan

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has revealed where the Gunners' priorities lie for the remainder of the summer transfer window. “Arsenal’s priority was and still is the outgoings,” Romano told CaughtOffside. "After Torreira and Pablo Mari, Runarsson has signed on loan to Alanyaspor and Hector Bellerin hopes to terminate the contract to return to Spain as soon as possible.

“Still, I’m aware that Edu and Mikel Arteta are exploring options for another Arsenal signing. But always with the names under the radar."

Vieira claim

Crystal Palace manager Patrick Vieira has named Arsenal as one of the teams that will be challening for the Premier League title this term. Speaking to Sky Sports, Vieira said: "When you look at the number of points [Palace have got], of course playing against two teams who are fighting to win the Premier League is always going to be challenging. But I'm more interested in the performances.

"I think today we showed character, we saw personality and we saw a lot of discipline that will help us to win football matches. And of course, the game against Arsenal overall, especially in the second half, was a good performance.

"So I believe that we are on the right path, we have to keep working well. We have players who can make the difference so we have to keep working like we did tonight."
