Arsenal news: Emery's transfer priority, why Luiz should have cost £34.8m, Nelson on Pepe

It was a good start to the new Premier League season for Arsenal.

A Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang goal secured all three points away at Newcastle United on Sunday.

Three of the club's new summer signings made an appearance - all from the substitutes' bench.

And there were some young guns in the starting lineup too.

Focus immediately turns to their first home game of the season, against Burnley, this weekend.

Here are the biggest news stories from around Arsenal in the last 24 hours.

Reiss Nelson hopes

It may have surprised some fans to see Reiss Nelson's name in the starting lineup for the opening game of the season against Newcastle on Sunday.

The teenager made three Premier League appearances in the 2017/18 season and after a year on loan at Hoffenheim returned to the club this summer.

And he was given the nod by Unai Emery against the Magpies, putting in a decent shift as the Gunners won 1-0.

But he is under no illusions as to the size of his task to keep his place in the team, with Nicolas Pepe joining the club for a club-record fee this summer.

Not that Nelson is concerned by Pepe's arrival, in fact, quite the opposite.

Here is what he has had to say about the new signing and the start of the season.

Transfer business analysed

There will always be differences of opinion around how much a player is worth and whether or not a transfer sum was correct or not.

And with transfer costs sky-rocketing, people will be only too quick to have their say.

And a UK-based investment company have certainly had their say on the Gunners' deals.

Carteret Analytics believe the Gunners could have earned a whopping £19million more from the sale of Iwobi, although they did underpay for David Luiz.

Emery's transfer priority

The summer transfer window may have already closed, but Unai Emery and Arsenal fans will be looking ahead to January already.

The Gunners enjoyed a fine window, signing five players permanently and one on a season-long loan.

But after just one game of the new season, it's clear to see where Emery's transfer priorities lie when the window opens once more.

Here we take a look at the problems the Arsenal head coach has.

New kits

Work is complete on the Arsenal kits they will be wearing in 2020/21.

Yes, you read that right, the kits the Gunners players will be wearing this time next season have already been finalised.

Adidas have created some smart kits for this season and the challenge for the German sportswear giant now is one familiar to rock bands the world over, what to do next after the rush of adulation that came with their first release.

We spoke to the man who created them.
