Arsenal news: Emery's transfer hint, Martinelli praise, Mislintat's claim and next captain

It's been a great pre-season tour of the United States for Arsenal thus far.

Things kicked off with a 3-0 win over Colorado Rapids on Tuesday morning (UK time) with Bukayo Saka, James Olayinka and summer signing Gabriel Martinelli all getting on the scoresheet.

Then there was a much more sterner test against Bayern Munich a couple of days later. One that the Gunners came through impressively with Eddie Nketiah netting the winner.

Next up is a clash against Serie A outfit Fiorentina and some Gunners are hoping from some fresh faces in the coming days.

Speaking of transfers, the Gunners continue to be linked with moves for a host of players despite reports that Emery only has a budget of £45m to sign at least two defenders, a midfielder and a winger.

Ahead of what could be a busy summer for the club, here's the news emerging from the Emirates Stadium over the last 24 hours.

Emery's transfer hint

Unai Emery decided the former Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was best suited to the right channel in a 4-2-3-1 system against Bayern.

To the Spaniard's credit it was a wise choice.

The Gabon international might be in his 30's but that didn't stop him from causing David Alaba trouble whilst also playing a huge role in the own goal which gave the Gunners the lead.

But was Emery dropping a clue about his transfer plans?

Gabriel Martinelli praise

Speaking of Emery, he's also hinted at first-team chances for new Arsenal signing Gabriel Martinelli in 2019/2020.

Despite links to the likes of Wilfried Zaha, Ryan Fraser and Nicolas Pepe, the Spanish head coach insists the forward will get chances if he continues to impress in training and in the pre-season friendlies.

"We have a big commitment with young players from our own academy and also from our scouts," Emery said. "Martinelli is a young player and at the moment he is training very well with us.

"We want to do one process with him, it started two weeks ago with us training and playing matches.

"We are going to work with him on this progress, giving him chances and if he deserves more minutes he will get them."

Mislintat's claim

Sven Mislintat has revealed the reasons behind his Gunners exit in February 2019.

Speaking in an interview with 11Freunde, and translated by Arseblog, Mislintat has revealed his side of the story.

"At Arsenal, I was already fully responsible for transfers, as there was no sporting director," he said. "But in England it isn’t usual [for the sporting director] to sit on the bench, so you’re much less visible.

"Last summer there were leadership changes at Arsenal. It had actually been agreed that I would become technical director, so then I would be around the team on a daily basis.

"But the new leadership had their own agenda and other candidates. On top of that, we had different approaches."

Holding's future

Could Rob Holding be the next Arsenal captain?

Former Gunners midfielder Jack Wilshere certainly thinks to and it would appear that Unai Emery is on the same wavelength.

Following Laurent Koscielny's refusal to go on the club's pre-season tour to the United States, it's almost certain that he will be stripped of the captaincy even if he was to stay.

And Emery's comments hint at Holding being under consideration.

"I want one English player in these five captains. Last year [Granit] Xhaka, Mesut [Ozil] and Nacho [Monreal] were working as captains. But after Aaron Ramsey and Petr Cech left - and possibly Laurent Koscielny - I will want more.

"An English player who grew up in our academy can understand the English spirit and Arsenal values. These are the qualities and more [we want]."
