Arsenal news: Double injury boost, Cedric deal, Arteta's transfer admission, Emery on Pepe issue

Transfer deadline day has come and gone, Arsenal now focus their attentions on Sunday's Premier League encounter against Burnley.

It wasn't a busy January for the Gunners in terms of incoming and outgoings, but the squad at Mikel Arteta disposal is the one he must use to bring success between now and the end of the season.

Still in the FA Cup as well as the Europa League, there's a chance the north London outfit could finish the campaign with a trophy as well as sealing a return to the Champions League next term.

Arsenal transfer window verdict

Having kicked off the month with a 2-0 win over Manchester United, it's been three successive draws for Arsenal in the Premier League which has left them 10 points off the top four.

A much needed victory over Burnley coupled with results going their way this weekend would reignite a top four push in what is their final game before the inaugural Premier League winter break.

With that said, here's all the news from around the Emirates Stadium over the past 24 hours.

Double injury boost

Sead Kolasinac and Shkodran Mustafi are in contention for the trip to Turf Moor.

Both players are still considered injury doubts for the game, with Kolasinac dealing with a thigh strain and Mustafi sustaining a sprained ankle in the 2-1 win at Bournemouth on Monday night.

But neither player has been ruled out of the game, with the Gunners confirming that both defenders will be assessed ahead of the game.

Updates via the club's official website reads: "Sead Kolasinac. Left thigh strain. Has progressed well this week and will be assessed ahead of Burnley (a).

"Shkodran Mustafi, Left ankle. Sprained ankle during Bournemouth (a) on 27 January. Being assessed ahead of Burnley (a)."

Cedric joins on loan

Cedric Soares became the second player to join the Gunners on loan last month as his move from Southampton was confirmed on deadline day.

And the Portugal international is delighted to have made the temporary switch to north London.

"It feels amazing. It's a dream come true being here, and being able to play for Arsenal is unreal," he said. "For me, Arsenal is a top team. They are a very, very good club, with fantastic fans as well.

"They are known to be so well supported and for me, it's a pleasure to be here. Like I said, it's a dream come true because I always thought about coming here and imagined it, and seeing it happen is really amazing.

"That's massive for me to come here. Like I said, I came to the Premier League four-and-a-half years ago and now to achieve this move to Arsenal is massive. It's all I wanted and it's really important in my career as well."

Arteta press conference transcript

The Arsenal head coach faced the media ahead of the game against the Clarets, some of the main talking points surrounded what Mikel Arteta is expecting for the remainder of the season and his verdict on Cedric as well as Pablo Mari.

"He's [Cedric] a player who's got a big experience. He's played in different countries, he's played in this league, he knows what it means. He's very willing to go to another top club and he's got that desire, that commitment.

"I followed him a few seasons ago, I started to follow him and I really like what he can bring. They were the right conditions for us as well to try to improve the squad.

"For me, it's very important. He [Pablo Mari] balances what I want to do from the back line, he gives more options, more solutions, he opens up the pitch more. Again, he's a player that we've been following for the last few months.

"We are really happy to have him."

Emery speaks out

Unai Emery has said that the signing of Nicolas Pepe in the summer transfer window was one of the problems which ultimately cost him his job Arsenal.

The Spaniard was sacked in November following a poor run of form that saw the Gunners fall way off the pace in the Champions League race.

Eventually succeeded by Arteta - after Freddie Ljungberg's stint as interim head coach - Emery has since explained the key factors that contributed to his downfall at the Emirates.

"I am clear about my diagnosis and we did good things there," Emery told Marca via Sport Witness. "I think we had a good first year, taking two competitions well as Europa League and Premier League.

"The process was good. When we played possession, we did it; when we had to press, we did it. And we were competitive, playing as the game required. With moments of possession game and moments of three quick touches.

"There were several problems: four captains; the Ozil-Kolasinac case; Pepe's signing, who needs time since he came from France. We didn't play well, that's for sure."
