Arsenal news: Arteta appointment 'imminent', ex-Liverpool star breaks his silence, Vieira claim

Arsenal could finally appoint a new head coach this week.

Freddie Ljungberg has been in interim charge following the sacking of Unai Emery almost three weeks ago and the club legend has overseen two draws, two defeats and one victory in his five games in this position.

But it's clear that the Gunners hierarchy need to make a decision on a permanent manager, ideally before the trip to Merseyside to face a resurgent Everton side who could be under the management of Carlo Ancelotti for the fixture.

Art de Roche's verdict on Arsenal vs Olympiacos

The north London outfit will go into the game on the back of a 3-0 loss at home to Manchester City at the weekend, but they did win their last away fixture in the Premier League.

That was against West Ham United nine days ago with Nicolas Pepe among the scorers, and now all the attention is on trying to get back on the winning trail when they face the Toffees in the early kick-off on Saturday.

With that said, here's all the news from around the Emirates Stadium over the past 24 hours.

Next Arsenal manager latest

There's conflicting reports when it comes to the Gunners' search for a new manager.

Mikel Arteta was thought to be close to landing the job after holding talks with Gunners managing director Vinai Venkatesham and club lawyer Huss Fahmy at his Manchester home during the early hours of Monday morning.

But according to Eurosport France, fellow former Arsenal captain Patrick Vieira is the favourite to be appointed ahead of Arteta.

Safe to say, this report didn't go down too well among some Gunners fans.

Arteta 'identifies' January transfer targets

But according to The Independent, Arteta is set to be appointed as the new Arsenal manager after talks have progressed.

The report claims that as part of Arteta’s negotiations, the Spaniard has discussed what staff he will bring in, as well as the potential players the Gunners could target in January.

Having spent big in the summer transfer window, it remains to be seen what kind of budget the Gunners are able to hand the Spaniard in a bid to turn things around in the second half of the season.

Furthermore, the report states that Ljungberg will meet with the club on Thursday to discuss is own future, but there is an expectation he will stay on as an assistant regardless of what staff changes Arteta makes.

Alonso to Arsenal?

If Arteta was to leave City, reports claimed Pep Guardiola would be interested in appointing Alonso as a replacement, just like the Spaniard would be keen to bring him to north London.

But Alonso, who is currently making his first strides in management after taking over at Real Sociedad B in the summer, reiterated his desire to stay in Spain.

"No. I’m here at ease, my head is only here," he told Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo. "I have no other thoughts. No proposal has come to me and I am where I want to be.

"I’m very happy. After finishing my career as a player, being able to start another one and return to Donostia [San Sebastian], to my club, seeing how things are being done, is a pleasure.

"Things are going well. I’m just starting, I’m enjoying it and it’s serving me well. When the club and I decided to work here, everything made sense. Over time you reaffirm that it was a good decision.

"I have fitted in with the players since arriving and I am working to acquire knowledge, experiences, getting it right, making mistakes, correcting and then gradually finding the way."

Arteta to be appointed in '48 hours'

Arsenal will have a new manager in the dugout for when they face Everton at Goodison Park.

That's according to our friends at the Daily Mirror.

The report claims that Mikel Arteta has reached an agreement to replace Unai Emery in the Emirates Stadium dugout and is now ready to sign a three-and-a-half year deal after extensive negotiations in the past 48 hours.
