Arsenal new boy already showing his loyalty with refusal to Tottenham supporter

Incoming Arsenal goalkeeper Matt Turner has already endeared himself to his new team's fans by refusing to sign a shirt handed to him by a Tottenham supporter.

The United States international was saying his farewells to New England Revolution before making his switch to the Premier League. Arsenal reached an agreement in principle over the goalkeeper in January, but no deal was announced during the last window - though the American side made an announcement in February before the Gunners gave the game away for good in May.

Revs fans gathered at the club's Gillette Stadium to say their goodbyes, with Turner watching the game from the bench as the Major League Soccer outfit won 2-1 against Minnesota United. However, as one fan in a Tottenham shirt attempted to get an autograph from the 27-year-old, he quickly remembered where he will soon be playing his club football.

In a video shared by New England Revolution, Turner can be seen approaching a group of fans in the stands and signing a couple of autographs. When he approaches a supporter wearing a Tottenham shirt, though, we can hear a pointed "oh no" as he passes them by and moves on to another fan holding up a 'Turner 30' Revs jersey.

Turner is expected to cost Arsenal somewhere in the region of £7.5million when he completes his move. With Bernd Leno potentially leaving North London this summer, the 18-cap international may well find himself in direct competition with Aaron Ramsdale.

"Good lad. Can't wait to see him in the red and white," was the response of one Arsenal fan after watching the video. A second, meanwhile, said "He [is] already a legend before even touching a ball."

The Revolution started the Minnesota game with youngster Djordje Petrovic between the sticks and Turner on the bench. Serbian international Petrovic looks set to start for Bruce Arena's team going forward as they aim for another playoff run.

"One day at a time," Turner said in a post-match press conference when asked about his next steps. "I don't think I could have ever imagines this six years ago - my only goal was to get better every single day and that's going to continue to be my mentality going forward.

"From here on out I'm going to go over there [to Arsenal], get comfortable, have a kid, get uncomfortable (laughs) and from there just put my best foot forward every single day and do my best to earn the love from the fans - the same love from the fans that I've got here, and give it my best shot." Turner is due to arrive in London in the next few days, after which he is set for a medical before officially joining up with his new Arsenal teammates.
