Arsenal need only look at Liverpool to show their £35m transfer gamble is worth taking

Comparisons between the project Mikel Arteta is trying to put into place at Arsenal and the job Jurgen Klopp has done at Liverpool are made all the time.

The Reds were a side who had lost their way after a glorious past, which is much the position the Gunners find themselves in right now.

With Arsenal looking likely to be outside of European competition for the first time in 25 years next season fans will hope that parallels drawn between the two are relatively accurate as this is a fate Klopp had to endure during his second year at Anfield.

Arteta even referenced it himself in an interview the day after his side were eliminated from the Europa League by Unai Emery's Villarreal.

"We have some really good examples with teams in this country that have been out of Europe and that was the defining moment in that project to go on and be much stronger," he said.

"We have to look at what happened there to understand how we can make the most of it.

"We cannot be crying and stuck on what we don’t have. We have to see what we do have and maximise it to get what we want."

At the time Liverpool's pulling power was significantly reduced compared to their Premier League competitors.

Most of what they had in terms of ability to attract top quality players depended on their historical status as one of England's and Europe's biggest clubs.

Unable to shop in the top markets the Reds had to look slightly lower down the food chain in order to help Klopp rebuild his squad.

A shrewd acquisition was made in the form of Gini Wijnaldum from Newcastle before Andy Robertson was brought in from Hull the following season. Both were signed from clubs who had been relegated the season before, but would go on to play a crucial part in the sides the would claim Champions League and Premier League success over the following years.

As Arsenal face the similarly daunting prospect of trying to rebuild the side with significantly reduced pulling power they could do well to take a leaf out of Liverpool's book.

One relegated player who they have been linked with is Sheffield United's Sander Berge.

football.london understands that the Norway international, who is part of the Blades side that are now heading back to the Championship, is keen on a move to the Gunners in order to link up with his close friend and compatriot Martin Odegaard.

The 23-year-old has a £35 million release clause, contrary to some reports, which would make signing him something of a gamble for Arsenal.

Central midfield is an area they need to strengthen in though as Dani Ceballos is set to return to Real Madrid once his loan spell ends while the futures of Joe Willock, Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Matteo Guendouzi, Lucas Torreira, Granit Xhaka and Mohamed Elneny are all still up in the air..

With that in mind they can ill-afford to turn their noses up at a player simply because he is part of a side who have been so poor for much of this season.

Gambling on relegated players is a risk that paid off for Liverpool in the past and it could well do the same for Arsenal this summer.
