Arsenal morning headlines as Unai Emery blasts Mesut Ozil, Kenny Sansom in hospital

Here are the Arsenal morning headlines for Saturday, May 16.

Emery tells Ozil to 'look at himself'

Former Arsenal manager Unai Emery believes that Mesut Ozil failed to show the commitment required during his time at the Emirates Stadium.

The Spanish boss was sacked in November after a series of poor results and he has recently spoken out on his time in North London.

Emery outlined that Ozil, who made just seven appearances under his former manager earlier this season, failed to gain the trust of his fellow teammates.

"In the end he has to look at himself. At his attitude and his commitment," Emery told the Mail Online.

"I tried my utmost to help Ozil. Throughout my career, talented players have been my favourites and they have played at their best or close to their best with me.”

The former Arsenal boss also admitted that he originally viewed the German as a potential captain but found that he lacked the commitment required to play at the top level.

"One of the captains could possibly have been Ozil but the dressing room didn't want him to be captain," he added.

"His level of commitment was not that of someone who deserved to be captain, and that's not what I decided, that's what the players decided."

Arsenal legend Sansom admitted to hospital

Arsenal legend Kenny Sansom has been taken to hospital in Devon after allegedly being beaten up in a drunken row.

According to reports, Sansom fell down and suffered a head injury after a disagreement.

A tweet from Sansom's Twitter account on Friday read: "Kenny is currently ill in hospital. He is being well cared for and does not have COVID-19.

"Kenny’s family and close friends kindly ask the media to respect his and their privacy, plus that of the healthcare workers treating Kenny."

The 61-year-old represented the Gunners throughout the 1980s and is widely regarded as one of the best left-backs to play for the club.

Former boss claims he tried to sign Palace’s Zaha

Emery has been in the headlines for a number of reasons over the last 24 hours, after giving a number of interviews to British press.

The former Arsenal head coach got fans talking when he outlined that the club overruled him by signing Nicolas Pépé instead of his preferred target of Wilfried Zaha at Crystal Palace.

Arsenal’s hierarchy, including head of football Raul Sanllehi and technical director Edu, were said to have pushed for a move to sign the former LOSC Lille player over Zaha.

"We signed [Nicolas] Pépé. He’s a good player but we didn’t know his character and he needs time, patience. I favoured someone who knew the league and wouldn’t need to adapt," Emery told the Guardian.

"[Wilfried] Zaha won games on his own: Tottenham, Manchester City, us.

"Incredible performances. I told them: 'This is the player I know and want.' I met Zaha and he wanted to come."
