Arsenal morning headlines as Gunners fail to reach Thomas Partey agreement, Mesut Ozil in exile

Here are your Arsenal morning headlines for Thursday, 24 September.

Arsenal keen to snub Atletico offer

Every club has their transfer saga of the summer. Liverpool were linked with Thiago Alcantara for an age, Manchester United still harbour hopes of prising Jadon Sancho away from Borussia Dortmund, and Chelsea are linked with every goalkeeper who isn’t Kepa Arrizabalaga.

For Arsenal, their long-term quarry has been Thomas Partey of Atletico Madrid. While Gunners fans would all like the deal to be completed in order to draw a line under this seemingly endless tale, negotiations continue.

The Spanish side are hoping to take Lucas Torreira on loan for a season to sweeten the deal. However, the Gunners are looking to part ways with the Uruguayan permanently in order to raise transfer funds for the likes of Partey.

What to expect from Arsenal in the transfer window

And it is being reported by Sky Sports News, via the Express, that a favourable offer will be coming in from Torino. Their manager, Marco Giampaolo, coached Torreira at Sampdoria and a reunion could be on the cards.

Arteta on Ozil after Leicester win

Mikel Arteta rotated his team for the 2-0 victory over Leicester City in the Carabao last night, but there was no room for Mesut Ozil.

Speaking after the game, Mikel Arteta hinted that the German has struggled to fit into a team that is “evolving”.

“The team is evolving, you can see the level they are achieving. This is where we are at the moment. We want to evolve more and play better and compete better. We need to keep maintaining that.

“We are picking the players that we believe are the best for each game. You can see we keep training, it's what we're trying to do.”

Nelson to leave on loan?

Arteta was delighted with the performance of Reiss Nelson at the King Power Stadium. The 20-year-old started the game, before being replaced by Willian after 72 minutes.

He wasn’t in the matchday squad for Arsenal’s opening two league matches of the season, though, and with the talent the Gunners possess in forward positions, it’s hard to see how he can force his way into Arteta’s starting XI on a regular basis.

While Arsenal would be happy for him to continue his development with regular football out on loan, football.london understands the player has not given up hope of remaining with the club.

Whatever decisions are made over the next couple of weeks, Nelson can be pleased with his efforts at Leicester. James Benge assessed his performance here.
