Here are the Arsenal morning headlines for Sunday, August 30.
Arsenal to ditch Martinez for Brentford goalkeeper - report
Arsenal want to reportedly bring in Brentford goalkeeper David Raya to provide back-up to Bernd Leno – with Emiliano Martinez set to leave.
The Athletic claims that Argentina international Martinez wants to depart the Gunners in a bid to establish himself as a number one at a top club as Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta is insistent that Leno remains his first choice.
That is despite Martinez – who has been at the Emirates Stadium for 10 years – impressing towards the end of last season when Leno was ruled out through injury.
Arsenal goalkeeping coach Inaki Cana worked with Raya at Brentford – and Arteta is believed to be a long-term admirer of his fellow Spaniard.
Memorable day for Maitland-Niles ends with England call up
Arsenal youngster Ashley Maitland-Niles received his first England senior squad call up on Saturday evening.
It topped a memorable day for the 23-year-old as he celebrated his birthday, scored in the victorious Community Shield penalty shoot-out against Liverpool and was named man of the match.
However, Maitland-Niles has been linked with a move to Wolverhampton Wanderers, with the Midlands club believed to have had a £15million bid rejected by the Gunners, as they are said to be holding out for a fee of at least £20m
Arteta “delighted” for Arsenal star
Versatile Maitland-Miles “has to be able to compete every day in training,” Arsenal head coach Arteta said after the Community Shield win.
Asked about the possibility of selling a player of his ability, Arteta said: “The way he is at the moment is showing me that he can do it, the mentality and the way he’s going about every single detail, the preparation is much better than before and I am delighted and very happy for him.
“He’s been changing a lot of things around for him to become the player he is.”
