Arsenal morning headlines as details of £52m double deal emerge and Leeds thrashing remembered

Here are your Arsenal headlines for the morning of April 11, 2020.

Smalling transfer boost

Arsenal are one of the clubs reportedly interested in signing Manchester United outcast Chris Smalling this summer.

And the Gunners look to have been handed a timely boost in the race to sign him.

The Englishman is on loan in Italy for the season, starring for Roma in Serie A. And the Italian giants would like to sign him permanently.

But according to reports in the Sun, they may not have the necessary funds to get a deal done, putting Arsenal and north London rivals Tottenham on red alert.

United are thought to want in the region of £25million for the former Fulham man, with Roma facing financial difficulties over the coronavirus pandemic.

Leeds thrashing remembered

Much has been said about Arsenal's Invincibles over the years.

The 2003/04 team will forever be remembered for going the entire Premier League season without losing.

It was a feat that Liverpool looked like they would emulate this year, only to fall to defeat at Watford in their 28th game of the campaign.

A number of games stand out from that Invincibles campaign, but one that maybe does not get the headlines as much is a 5-0 thrashing of Leeds United in April.

Legendary Sky Sports commentator Martin Tyler named that clash as one of his top ten Premier League memories.

Double swoop disaster

Francis Cagigao has been responsible for a lot of good at Arsenal.

The famed scout is rightly lauded for bringing the likes of Cesc Fabregas, Heto Bellerin, Alexis Sanchez and latterly Gabriel Martinelli to the Emirates.

But not everything he touches turns to gold, as emphasised in a piece by The Athletic.

Cagigao was also responsible for the likes of Lucas Perez and Shkodran Mustafi arriving in north London - for a combined fee of £52million.

And The Athletic report that then manager Arsene Wenger tried to warn him off taking the plunge on the two of them in words that will make Arsenal fans turn away.
