Arsenal morning headlines as Aubameyang backed to stay as Gunners make Cagigao decision

Here are the Arsenal morning headlines for Thursday, August 6.

Aubameyang backed to stay

Former Arsenal forward Charlie Nicholas believes Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will extend his stay with the Gunners.

The club captain’s future is uncertain, with his current contract set to expire at the end of next season.

Arsenal hope the Gabon international will put pen to paper on a new deal in the coming weeks, and Nicholas believes Aubameyang will ultimately commit his future to the club.

"I do genuinely believe if I said to Aubameyang right now that there’s two in England that are bigger than Arsenal: there’s Liverpool and Manchester City," he told Off The Ball.

"Does he really want to go and join Manchester United? Are they getting closer? My answer is 'no'. I think Manchester City and Liverpool are still way out there.

"I don’t think Juventus are miles ahead, Barcelona are struggling for cash and I don’t think Real Madrid are so rich as what they were and what they want.

"So I’m finding that for one of the best strikers and certainly one of the best finishers in world football, I am very optimistic about him being in the red and white of Arsenal."

Arsenal make Cagigao decision

Arsenal scout Francis Cagigao is set to leave the club as one of the 55 members of staff that will be made redundant.

The Gunners announced the mass lay-offs on Wednesday due to the financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

Cagigao is thought to be among those affected by a decision, that has been criticised by some supporters.

The scout helped to unearth Cesc Fabregas, Hector Berllin and Gabriel Martinelli, and has been at Arsenal for more than 20 years.

The club has now entered the required 30-day consultation period following the announcement of their redundancy proposals.

Coutinho talks at “advanced stage”

Arsenal are edging closer to signing Philippe Coutinho on loan from Barcelona, according to Diario Sport.

The former Liverpool man is in “advanced talks” with the Gunners after they secured a place in next season’s Europa League by winning the FA Cup.

Coutinho’s agent says his client is determined to return to the Premier League after a disappointing two and a half years at Barcelona.

The Brazil international also failed to impress during a loan spell at Bayern Munich this season.

However, Arsenal hope the 28-year-old can bolster their attacking options ahead of Mikel Arteta’s first full campaign at the helm.
