Arsenal morning headlines as Anthony Martial transfer raised and Aubameyang responds to rumours

Here are the Arsenal morning headlines for Tuesday, June 2.

Gunners wanted Martial

Arsenal wanted to sign Anthony Martial from Manchester United in exchange for Alexis Sanchez in January 2018, but had to settle for Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

ESPN report, as cited by the Daily Mail, that Arsene Wenger asked for Martial to be included in the swap deal but United insisted that he was remaining at Old Trafford.

It was the Armenian playmaker who ended up moving to north London instead in a deal that went badly for everyone involved.

Both Sanchez and Mkhitaryan failed to make any impact at their new clubs and are now both on loan in Serie A, with the report highlighting how the deal has cost the clubs a combined £46.5million in wages alone.

Martial meanwhile is enjoying much better fortunes and has netted 16 goals already this season.

Aubameyang speaks on rumours over future

Gunners captain and star striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has given an elusive answer regarding his future in North London.

The Gabonese striker is out of contract at the Emirates in the summer of 2021 and there has been a great deal of speculation on his future.

L'Equipe reported that Arsenal had offered the player a contract extension on Monday but ESPN disputed such a claim.

Aubameyang said on his Instagram stories: "Don't listen [to] 'em, listen music better."

Gunners loanee in limbo

Tyreece John-Jules was on the verge of being involved in matchdays for Arsenal’s first-team squad when he left on loan for Lincoln City.

The 19-year-old was an unused substitute in the 1-0 win over Leeds United in the FA Cup third round in January, before moving to the League One side on loan.

However, it appears likely that the League One season is now over - but until that is finalised, he will be unable to return to the Gunners, football.london understands.

The rules are unclear as to how the striker will finish this season, but he is highly rated at the Emirates and Mikel Arteta has given a lot of youth products a chance in the first-team.
