Arsenal morning headlines as £45m wonderkid eyed and Man United linked with Gunners legend

Overmars linked with United role

Former Arsenal winger Marc Overmars is being linked with the director of football job at Manchester United after hinting that he could leave Ajax.

Overmars has impressed in the role for Ajax while working under chief executive and former United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar.

However, the 47-year-old has hinted at a new challenge after admitting that the Ajax job requires ‘too much energy’.

"When I was appointed to this job at Ajax I knew I only wanted to stay for three or four years maximum," Overmars said via The Mirror . "I have been here eight seasons now!

"For me – but just as much for Edwin – it is sure that we are not going to carry on here until we are 60.

"This job at Ajax is costing too much energy. The whole of the Netherlands is constantly on my back and has an opinion about us.

"The job has brought a lot of great things too. Edwin and I are proud that we have brought Ajax back where it should be in Europe.”

Former Spurs flop could wreck Arsenal transfer plans

Former Tottenham Hotspur defender Federico Fazio could indirectly hinder Arsenal ’s transfer plans if he seals a surprise move to Barcelona.

Currently with Roma, Fazio is wanted by Barca, who are looking for a low-cost, short-term solution to their shortage at the back, as per Romanews.eu .

Were Fazio to complete his switch to the Camp Nou, that may force Arsenal to let Shkodran Mustafi go for free next summer with the German also having been linked with Barca.

Mustafi, who joined Arsenal from Valencia in 2016, is likely on his way out of north London after turning down the club’s offer of a contract extension.

Arsenal would prefer to receive a fee for the 28-year-old, who is yet to start in the league this term, in January as opposed to losing him for free.

Gunners eye Brenner deal

Arsenal are one of several clubs to have expressed an interest in signing Sao Paulo forward Brenner, according to Calciomercato .

The 20-year-old has emerged as hot property in Brazil after scoring 17 goals in all competitions this season.

Brenner is also thought to hold an Italian passport, like Arsenal’s Gabriel Martinelli, which would make any potential deal easier.

Brenner’s contract, which expires in 2022, contains a £45million release clause.

However, Arsenal will likely face stiff competition for his signature with Paris Saint-Germain, Juventus and AC Milan all thought to be interested.
