Arsenal: Mikel Arteta delivers Gabriel injury update ahead of London derby with West Ham

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has confirmed that Gabriel faces a late test to prove his fitness to face West Ham.

Gabriel has been a doubt for the game on Saturday after going off early during Wednesday’s win over Olympiacos.

The centre-back was struggling with an issue after colliding with goalkeeper David Raya and was substituted for Cristhian Mosquera with around 15 minutes to go.

Arteta spoke positively about Gabriel’s fitness after the game, however, and was positive that no injury had been sustained.

“I think he’s going to be okay,” he said. “He felt something, I think it was a kick, I’m not sure, in the first half, and he was a bit uncomfortable, and towards the second half he was there.

“He could carry on, but we decided not to take any risks, really, because he’s played a lot of games. He comes from a long-term injury as well, and we need to look after him.”

Arteta has given a further update on Gabriel ahead of Saturday’s clash with West Ham at the Emirates Stadium.

Speaking on Friday, he said: “We have to wait and see until after training, but we weren’t too concerned about him.”

Gabriel being fit would be a boost for Arsenal, who could go top of the Premier League - even if only for a few hours - with a win against West Ham.

Meanwhile, summer signing Piero Hincapie has missed the last four games due to injury and Arteta gave an update on him on Friday, saying: “He will be available after the international break. This game came too fast.”

Arteta made six changes for the victory over Olympiacos in midweek and a similar number are expected this weekend.

Full-backs Jurrien Timber and Riccardo Calafiori should come into the side, along with Declan Rice returning to the midfield.

Bukayo Saka and Eberechi Eze were on the bench on Wednesday, and came on for the final 20 minutes, but are set to start against West Ham.
