Arsenal midfielder Joe Willock joins Newcastle on loan for the rest of the season

Newcastle have signed Joe Willock on loan from Arsenal for the rest of the season.

The 21-year-old has been impressive in the Europa League this season where he has scored three goals and got three assists in five appearances.

However, he has not been able to translate that into Premier League form where the midfielder has managed just 14 minutes since the turn of the year.

Maitland-Niles, Mustafi, Willock - Arsenal transfer deadline update

It is hoped now that the loan move will give Willock some regular first team football to help continue his development.

football.london understands the deal does not have a clause in it to make the move permanent come the summer, with Mikel Arteta still keen for the midfielder to have a long term future with the club.

Willock is expected to provide competition for Jonjo Shelvey, Isaac Hayden, Jeff Hendrick and the Longstaff brothers in the central midfield position.

However, the 21-year-old's versatility means that he could end up playing further forward and competing with Miguel Almiron for the number 10 spot in support of Callum Wilson.

His signing rules out the possibility of Ainsley Maitland-Niles moving to St. James Park.

The England international had been linked with a move to the Magpies, but due to Premier League loan restrictions Newcastle are unable to sign more than one player on loan from the Gunners.

It now seems that Maitland-Niles is heading to West Brom for the remainder of the season, where he will try to help the Baggies avoid relegation.
