Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka targets early injury return but Mikel Arteta insists he will not rush him back

Mikel Arteta will not rush Granit Xhaka back from injury, despite confessing the Arsenal midfielder will be hungry to return a month early.

Xhaka was ruled out of action for three months in September after injuring his knee during the north London derby win over Tottenham.

The Switzerland international does not need surgery, though, and he has already begun his rehabilitation programme.

Xhaka has posted images of himself in the gym on social media and asked if he could be back quicker than the three months originally expected, Arteta said: “With Granit I don’t know.

“What I am sure is if you tell him three [months], he will be thinking two. He will be trying to cut edges and doing extra work to try to minimise that time, that’s for sure.

“We have to do it in the right way because it is a significant injury and we want to have him back properly when he can.”
