Arsenal midfielder Danielle van de Donk 'loves underdog tag' ahead of World Cup Final

Arsenal's Danielle van de Donk says the Netherlands are relishing the role of underdogs in Sunday’s World Cup Final.

The European champions set up the showdown at Lyon’s Groupama Stadium following a 1-0 win over Sweden after extra-time.

The USA will start as firm favourites to win a fourth title but Van de Donk insists the Dutch do not fear their celebrated opponents.

“I love being underdogs,” said Van de Donk. “It’s the best role you can be in. I like it. I don’t know the English word but I don’t think they [the US] think we’re that good. Underestimate? Yes, that’s it. That is going to be an advantage for us.

“If they do [underestimate us], we’ll show them wrong. We’re going to prove ourselves and show them what we’ve got. We might surprise them.

“You are in the final, so it’s everything or nothing. We’re going to give it everything we’ve got. Whatever the result is going to be, it’s going to be amazing for us.”

New Manchester United signing Jackie Groenen settled a dour contest last night with a brilliant winner in the 99th minute.
