Arsenal may have already missed out on a deal for William Saliba's perfect partner

William Saliba's Arsenal career will finally begin next season.

The French wonderkid arrived from Saint-Etienne last summer in a deal worth £27m, but was sent back to the Ligue 1 outfit on loan in order to continue his development.

Injuries aside, the 2019/20 season has turned out to be another one of promise for Saliba and Gunners supporters are already looking ahead to next term and how the teenager will get on.

Should Saliba be installed as head coach Mikel Arteta's first-choice centre-back next season, the question is who will partner him?

The Gunners have been linked with a number of central defenders, stretching all the way back to the January transfer window, with Dayot Upamecano, Axel Disasi and others constantly linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium.

Another name is Seko Fofana, Saliba's teammate at Saint-Etienne.

But have the Gunners already missed out on a deal for Saliba's perfect partner?

Well, during Unai Emery's first transfer window as head coach, he too was after defensive reinforcements and despite bringing in Sokratis Papastathopoulos from Borussia Dortmund, there was talk of one more addition.

Sven Mislintat - the club's then-head of recruitment - was keen on signing Caglar Soyuncu from Freiburg.

However, the Gunners weren't able to seal a deal for Mislintat's main transfer target and the Turkey international has gone from strength to strength since joining Premier League rivals Leicester City.

Soyuncu may have been the perfect partner for Saliba, this theory has even been hammered home by ex-Liverpool striker Emile Heskey who says the defender can play for any top team in the country.

"Soyuncu would fit in well at any club," Heskey told GentingBet. "He’s taken the role of centre back at Leicester, which was a very important role, following the footsteps of Wes Morgan and Johnny Evans, and no one knew what to expect of him.

"But he’s taken it by the scruff of the neck and he’s really improved and given something extra as well as he’s good on the ball.

"I don’t see him going anywhere, even Liverpool, as Leicester don’t need to sell unless they want to and they don’t have a ready-made player to fall into his spot.

"However, if Leicester did want to sell, Soyuncu could go to any of the top clubs."
