Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta opens up on what Pep Guardiola taught him at Man City

New Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta says Pep Guardiola taught him to be "ruthless" during their time together at Manchester City.

The Spaniard spoke to the press for the first time as Gunners boss on Friday in which he revealed his delight in returning to the club he represented as a player for five years.

On how working with two-time Premier League title winner Guardiola at the Etihad prepared him for taking the Arsenal job, Arteta said: "What I have learned mostly [from Pep] is you have to be ruthless and consistent.

"Every day is important, every act is important. The secret is that the people, players and staff have to believe what you are trying to deliver."

On his relationship with Guardiola, he added: "It's incredibly good and obviously he was sad and the timing wasn't the best for him but he understood.

"He knows how I have been growing. He has been so supportive. I said goodbye to the team, I cried, they were my family."

Arteta has put pen to paper on a three-and-a-half year deal at Arsenal; his first job in management.

On returning to the Emirates, he added: "[When leaving as a player], I said to the people [at Arsenal] 'I'm going outside [the club] I'm going to get prepared and then hopefully I'm going to come back one day when I feel prepared and ready'."

Arsene Wenger signed Arteta as a player, and the Spaniard also had a message for the man who was at the helm at Arsenal for 22 years.

Arteta said: "One man believed in me, Arsene Wenger. I wouldn't be sitting here without him giving me the opportunity to play for this club."
