Arsenal make Mikel Arteta decision after Everton loss as Alan Shearer issues damning verdict

Here is your Arsenal morning digest on Monday, December 21.

Gunners make Arteta decision

Arsenal are set to back manager Mikel Arteta despite the club's terrible start to the 2020/21 Premier League season.

The Gunners have picked up just 14 points from their opening 14 games, and Saturday's 2-1 defeat to Everton was the latest in a long line of setbacks for Arteta and his men.

However, according to The Athletic reporter David Ornstein, when speaking on Sky Sports' Sunday Supplement via the Express, the north London club will give the Spaniard 'a lot longer' in charge.

Ornstein has claimed that Arteta is going to get a much longer period of time to prove his worth at the Emirates Stadium than his predecessor Unai Emery.

Shearer delivers relegation verdict

Alan Shearer 'wouldn't be so sure' that Arsenal will avoid being relegated from the Premier League this season after the club's worst start to a domestic campaign in 46 years.

Speaking on BBC's Match of the Day, Shearer has listed some reasons why the Gunners could defy all of the odds and drop down to the Championship next season.

Shearer told the BBC: "I wouldn’t be so sure, not with that starting team, not with that attitude of some of those players. It is awful. They have no creativity, players going through the motions, players not working hard enough, players not closing down and Arteta should be a worried man relying on that group of players trying to save his job."

What Maitland-Niles did against Everton

Arsenal supporters have heaped praise on Ainsley Maitland-Niles for his display in Saturday evening's 2-1 defeat to Everton.

Maitland-Niles was handed a spot in Arteta's starting line-up ahead of Hector Bellerin and Gunners fans have been very complimentary of the England international, despite the defeat at Goodison Park.

One supporter tweeted: "One thing I've taken from that game is that I 100% trust and prefer Maitland-Niles over Bellerin."

The 23-year-old reportedly came close to leaving the Emirates over the summer, with Wolves very interested in the versatile Arsenal star.
