Arsenal make loan decision on talented youngster close to Mikel Arteta's first team

Highly rated central midfielder Matt Smith is set to spend the 2020/21 campaign on loan at Swindon Town, as per BBC Wiltshere Sport.

Despite not making his Arsenal debut last season, Smith was named on the bench six times under Mikel Arteta, including in the FA Cup final victory over Chelsea.

A constant figure in first team training after the restart, he build on the impressive season he had with Steve Bould and the Under-23s in which he took on a deeper role in midfield.

From a deeper berth, he helped with a goal and three assists in 12 Premier League 2 games last season whilst doing the essential job of building play and protecting the backline.

The newly-promoted League One side taking the central midfielder for next season continues Arsenal's impressive summer business in regard to loaning out young prospects for more first team experience.

Konstantinos Mavropanos was first to secure a move to Stuttgart in July, while the pace has picked up in the middle of August.

Zech Medley and Trae Coyle were both signed by fellow League One side Gillingham, and made their non-competitive debuts today [August 15] against Colchester United.

Discussing the signing of Medley on Monday, Evans said: “We are delighted that Zech has joined us. The lad has taken his time, spoken to numerous clubs and he is a superb addition.

"I would like to acknowledge the support of Mikel Arteta and his staff at Arsenal for agreeing that Zech should continue his education here."

There was also a debut for right-back Zak Swanson today for Dutch side MMV Maastricht in their friendly against Westerlo.

Smith is not expected to be the last Arsenal prospect to go out on loan as football.london revealed on August 6 that impressive striker Tyreece John-Jules has attracted interest from Championship clubs.

The 19-year-old spent the second half of last season on loan with Lincoln City before a foot injury cut his time away from north London short.
