Arsenal make loan decision for top U23 prospect on fringes of Mikel Arteta's squad

Highly-rated Arsenal forward Trae Coyle is set to spend next season on loan with Gillingham.

The League One club, who also recruited Zech Medley from the Gunners earlier this week, beat several rivals in their own division and abroad to secure the services of Coyle, who enjoyed an impressive 2019/20 in Arsenal's Under-23 set up.

Coyle scored two goals and provided three assists in 19 games for Steve Bould's side last season and performed sufficiently well to be invited to train with Mikel Arteta's first team on several occasions.

Indeed Coyle was part of Arsenal's post-restart training squad and featured for the first team in a friendly against Brentford at the Emirates Stadium.

Coyle, who signed professional terms with the Gunners in June 2019, had long been heralded as one of the top stars in the Hale End academy but suffered several injuries in his teens before a revival in the second half of the 2018/19 season.

Under manager Steve Evans, Gillingham are aiming high this season and believe that the addition of two promising prospects from Arsenal will greatly aid their promotion bid.

Discussing the signing of Medley on Monday, Evans said: “We are delighted that Zech has joined us. The lad has taken his time, spoken to numerous clubs and he is a superb addition.

"I would like to acknowledge the support of Mikel Arteta and his staff at Arsenal for agreeing that Zech should continue his education here."

Coyle and Medley were joined by right-back Zak Swanson in departing Arsenal this week as the youngster joined Dutch side MVV Maastricht. Centre forward Tyreece John-Jules and midfielder Matt Smith are among those who are also expected to secure temporary moves in the coming weeks.
