Arsenal make furlough decision following Liverpool and Tottenham criticism

Arsenal have reaffirmed their stance on paying their staff during the coronavirus crisis.

In a statement the Gunners opened up on the difficulties the club is facing at this uncertain time, but announced all staff would be paid their full salaries for April and May - full-time and casual staff.

Both Liverpool and Tottenham, among a number of other Premier League clubs, decided to use the Government's furlough scheme, only to backtrack following fan pressure.

And Arsenal have "no intention" of using the scheme to pay their staff. The statement read: "We are in ongoing contact with our employees through video conferences, newsletters and team meetings.

"We have made it clear to them that we are not considering redundancies, and we are fully focussed on protecting their well-being, jobs and salaries. All our employees are receiving their full salaries and we plan to continue this. We are not currently intending to use the Government’s furlough scheme.

"In addition to our employees, we are extending our commitment to pay casual workers on our payroll from the end of April to the end of May. For our matchday casual workers this means they will be paid for all four Premier League games that have been postponed and will be paid again should they work at these games once re-arranged."

Arsenal are also in continued negotiations with the players over a wage deferral.

As football.london reported on Sunday, the Arsenal first-team squad, led by vice-captain and PFA representative Hector Bellerin, rejected the offer of a 12.5% pay cut and subsequent talks about salary deferrals have also ended without agreement.

The Gunners say they are in "productive and ongoing" talks with their squad about changes to their pay after the first team squad rejected initial offers from the club hierarchy.
