Arsenal make David Luiz contract decision as Mikel Arteta confirms encouraging injury boost

Here is your Arsenal morning digest for Monday, February 15.

Luiz makes his voice heard in VAR check

Arsenal centre-back David Luiz made his return to the side for the Gunners' 4-2 win over Leeds United at the Emirates Stadium yesterday afternoon, starting at centre-back alongside Gabriel Magalhaes.

The Brazilian was forced to miss last Saturday's 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa at Villa Park through suspension, following his controversial sending-off against Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux.

However, Arsenal, as they have so often recently, were at the centre of a big refereeing decision once again, this time when referee Stuart Attwell decided to overrule his own decision for giving the Gunners a penalty when Bukayo Saka was clipped by Liam Cooper inside the box.

Attwell originally pointed to the spot before being urged to review his own decision on the pitchside monitor. While he was doing that, Luiz was heard shouting about the incident in relation to the one that saw him dismissed against Wolves.

He said: "Penalty and red card, like at Wolverhampton!"

Luiz's actions were soon heard by some Gunners supporters, who quickly backed up the Brazilian for his claims.

Arteta issues double injury update

Manager Mikel Arteta has confirmed that left-back Kieran Tierney has an outside chance of being fit for Thursday's Europa League round-of-32 first-leg tussle with Benfica.

The Scotland international missed yesterday's win against Leeds, meaning he has now been forced to sit out the Gunners' last six games in all competitions. However, Arteta, issuing a ray of hope, has suggested that the former Celtic man could return in midweek.

But he could not be so confident on the prospect of Thomas Partey returning in time for the trip to Rome.

The Spaniard said: "It seems unlikely at the moment but if there is probably one player who has the bigger chance [to play] it's Kieran.

"Probably in the next few days he can start to do some parts with the team but I don't know how it's going to evolve until he gets a little bit closer to training with the group."

Gunners set to make contract decision

Arsenal are ready to offer David Luiz a new one-year contract extension ahead of his current deal expiring at the end of the season, a report by The Independent claims.

The Gunners made the controversial decision to hand the former Chelsea man a new deal at the end of last season after coming in for criticism for some questionable performances.

However, Arteta values the centre-back's qualities and is keen to retain his services beyond the end of this season.

Not only does Arteta see the 33-year-old as a key player in the make-up of his defence, he also believes he is important in helping the club's younger players make the step-up into the first-team.
