Arsenal make contact with agent over summer transfer as Mikel Arteta targets attacking solution

Arsenal are interested in bringing PSV star Cody Gakpo to the club this summer, football.london understands.

The 22-year-old extended his contract until 2026 with the Dutch giants in January, but the likes of Liverpool, Manchester City and Bayern Munich remain interested in doing a deal for the winger this summer.

Gakpo has scored 18 goals and weighed in with 15 assists in 42 games across all competitions for PSV this season, although the Eredivisie outfit remain keen on keeping him at the Philips Stadion for at least another season.

As reported by football.london , Gunners owner Stan Kroenke will back manager Mikel Arteta with funds for new signings once the season ends and the Spaniard wants to bolster his first-team squad with a striker, central midfielder and a winger amid links to the likes of Darwin Nunez, Youri Tielemans and Marcos Asensio.

Arteta wants to strengthen Arsenal's first team squad in the summer, with the calibre of player the club are able to attract likely to depend on whether the Gunners secure European qualification via their final league position this season.

“The Champions League and the Europa League both require a much larger squad because the amount of games is much bigger," said manager Mikel Arteta.

"If we can afford it financially and we don’t have to do the turnaround in the squad that we’ve had to, what I want is 22 outfield players and three goalkeepers.

“A lot of things have to be put in place and that takes time, so I am expecting a busy summer.”

As things stand, the likes of Alexandre Lacazette, Mohamed Elneny and Eddie Nketiah are expected to leave the club when their respective contracts expire at the end of the season.

Matteo Guendouzi, Dinos Mavropanos and Lucas Torreira are among the loan players who are set to depart permanently in June, while a decision on William Saliba's future will also be made upon conclusion of his loan spell at Marseille.
