Arsenal maintain imperious Premier League record thanks to Liverpool's Leicester loss

Leicester's heroic victory over Liverpool not only damaged the Premier League title hopes of Jurgen Klopp's side - but also denied them the chance to match Arsenal's imperious record.

The Foxes were depleted with defensive injuries but substitute Ademola Lookman scored a superb winner after Mohamed Salah uncharacteristically missed from the spot.

Brendan Rodgers was without first-choice central defenders Wesley Fofana, Jonny Evans and Calgar Soyuncu but managed to draw a rare blank from the Reds with a makeshift backline.

Impressively, Leicester were the first team to prevent Klopp's goal-hungry side from scoring all season.

The clean sheet means that Arsenal's 2001/02 double-winning side remains the only team to score a goal in every single league match.

Leicester 1-0 Liverpool: Klopp offers damning verdict on Reds' no-show in defeat

The Gunners finished seven points ahead of the Reds that season as Arsene Wenger claimed his second domestic title in English football.

A side boasting the likes of Dennis Bergkamp, Robert Pires and Thierry Henry were not to be denied two decades ago and Liverpool missed the chance to match a stunning record.

The Reds have achieved plenty of other incredible feats in Klopp's time at Anfield but defeat in the West Midlands on Tuesday was a huge blow to their title hopes.

Leicester had only kept two clean sheets all season before their monumental defensive effort, highlighting Liverpool's troubles at the King Power.

Klopp's men remain six points behind Manchester City, who could extend that margin with victory away to Brentford on Wednesday.

Despite having their Boxing Day fixture postponed, the Reds lacked intensity in their performance and will rue more than just Salah's spot-kick being saved by Kasper Schmeichel.

"We were just not good enough," Klopp said at full-time. It was well deserved for Leicester, a very strange game. We played a really bad game.

"We started OK, then completely lost our rhythm and weren't calm enough to get it back. That's our fault. The circumstances too – Leicester played two days ago, they deserve it, absolutely."

Klopp's side could find themselves 12 points behind leaders City before they face Chelsea on Sunday.

But the German boss is more concerned about finding an immediate solution to his performances rather than the gap to Pep Guardiola's men.

"We should have defended better," Klopp added. "There were so many performances before normal level, there's no explanation. It's a big gap to City.

"It was not our plan to give them the chance to run away. If we play like tonight, we don't have to think about catching them but if we play as we normally do we can win games.

"My main concern is to find an explanation for tonight, not the gap to City."
