Arsenal locked in transfer talks to sign highly-rated Norwegian winger George Lewis

Arsenal are locked in talks to sign young Norwegian winger George Lewis following a successful trial period with the club, a report by Goal claims.

The 19-year-old, who used to be on the books of Norwegian third-division club Fram Larvik before becoming a free-agent, spent two weeks on trial with the Gunners earlier this year and has done enough to convince the Gunners to offer him a permanent contract.

Since making his senior debut in 2018, the teenager has spent two seasons playing in the lower reaches of Norwegian football.

According to the report, should the deal go through as planned, Lewis initially link up with Steve Bould's Under-23s side, opposed to following in the footsteps of the likes of Gabriel Martinelli and Matteo Guendouzi, who immediately earned places in the first-team following their respective arrivals at the Emirates Stadium.

Born in Rwanda, Lewis started his career at Norwegian club Tromso IL, rising through the youth ranks, before making the switch to Tromsdalen in 2017, where he put pen to paper on his first professional contract.

After a brief switch to Fram Larvik, Lewis spent time with Ipswich Town before becoming a free-agent and has been without a club since leaving the League One Tractor Boys.

After being initially handed a one-week trial with Arsenal, Lewis impressed that much that his trial period was extended by an additional week, suggesting that the Gunners see potential within him.

Now, the Emirates Stadium outfit are prepared to offer the youngster, who is capable of playing anywhere across the forward line, a permanent deal.

Should Arsenal get a deal over the line to sign Lewis, it could be a sign of what is to come for the North London outfit, with transfer funds expected to be limited by the time the next transfer window arrives because of the coronavirus pandemic.
