Arsenal loanee Folarin Balogun breaks silence on his international future amid England decision

Arsenal loanee Folarin Balogun has a serious decision to make regarding his future at senior international level after impressing at England youth levels.

Balogun has amassed a record of 11 goals in 26 England caps from under-17 to under-21 level but remains available to play for Nigeria. The 21-year-old has scored seven goals and provided a further two assists in 12 appearances for Stade Reims in Ligue 1 as he looks to impress Mikel Arteta ahead of next season.

Balogun continues to perform for England under-21s and bagged his seventh goal for the Young Lions in a 3-1 friendly win over Germany back in September. With a number of talented forwards ahead of him in the striker pecking order for Gareth Southgate's side, the Arsenal loanee has not ruled out the possibility of representing Nigeria at senior level on the international stage.

Speaking to BBC, Balogun said: "I haven't heard anything from Nigeria, but I'm open to anything because Nigeria is very close to my heart.

"My family's from there. I always have love for Nigeria. That's a conversation that I need to have with people around me, my agent and obviously my family.

"But if I was asked about the opportunity to play for Nigeria, then I can have that conversation. But first I need to be asked."

Balogun's contract at the Emirates Stadium expires at the end of the 2024/25 campaign, and the talented forward has become a fan-favourite at Reims but remains focused on improving his own game. "I remember before I came here, I had a lot of advice telling me that this would be a good league for me to develop," Balogun added.

"Now that I am here, I'm seeing the benefits of this league and I'm happy that I can help the team. You never know what the future might hold. I just try to focus on what I'm doing with the team and focus on the season."
