Arsenal lineups vs Brighton with Martinelli and Lacazette out as Arteta makes Aubameyang call

Arsenal's youngsters were sensational in their 3-1 victory over Chelsea on Boxing Day.

In the absence of established first teamers like Willian and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Emile Smith Rowe, Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli all stepped up to help the Gunners on their way to a first victory in seven Premier League matches.

Mikel Arteta won't have long to revel in the jubilation of victory though as Arsenal face an arguably even more important fixture away to Brighton on Tuesday.

The Spaniard now faces a selection headache with the impressive performances of his young players and the return to fitness of his captain.

Here football.london takes a look at how he could set Arsenal up for the vital trip to the South Coast.

Play them all -

One way Mikel Arteta could look to keep his captain and his youngsters happy is by playing the 31-year-old up front.

The Gabon striker is lethal in front of goal and with the increased number of chances being created the exciting trio of Smith Rowe, Saka and Martinelli in behind, you would back him to increase his disappointing tally of just five so far this season.`

However, the Arsenal boss has already claimed that Aubameyang's "natural" position is on the left wing, and with this is in mind he may be wary of playing him central.

It would also be incredibly harsh to drop Alex Lacazette after what was an impressive display against Chelsea.

The Frenchman works tirelessly for the team and provides more of a focal point and ability to drop deep to link up play than Aubameyang.

Auba on the left -

Baring in mind what we just mentioned about Arteta's preference to play his star striker out wide, it is worth considering that he could start there instead.

This would mean Gabriel Martinelli would drop out of the side despite his impressive display against the Blues.

In just one start the Brazilian has managed more shots on target (2) than his compatriot Willian (1) in the Premier League this season, and his intense pressing helped put Arsenal on the front foot.

But Martinelli has just come back from a six month injury layoff and may not be ready to start two games in the space of just three days.

Having seen what the 19-year-old can do, it would be devastating to lose him so soon after his return.

Leave him on the bench

Arteta could of course opt for the 'if it ain't broke don't fix it' approach and keep the exact same forward line that started on Boxing Day.

The foursome helped Arsenal look the most dangerous they have done all season as an offensive unit and created chances galore against a Chelsea side that has been much improved defensively this season.

The seven shots on target the Gunners managed in the game is the second most they have had in any Premier League home game under Mikel Arteta.

The Spaniard has reportedly faced murmurings of discontent from some of his more senior pros this season, and failing to restore a fully fit Aubameyang would probably not help this.

But at the same time such a bold decision could - if it pays off - stamp his authority down as a manager and give genuine credence to his claims of a meritocracy at the Emirates.
