Arsenal legend surprised by Manchester United striker Mason Greenwood's omission from England squad

Former Arsenal defender Nigel Winterburn has admitted he was surprised to see Mason Greenwood left out of the England squad for the current international break.

Greenwood has started all three of Manchester United 's Premier League games so far this season, scoring in each game against Leeds, Southampton and Wolves but there was still no space for him in Gareth Southgate's squad for games against Hungary, Andorra and Poland.

Southgate instead opted for Harry Kane, Dominic Calvert-Lewin (who has since withdrawn) and Patrick Bamford as his central striking options for the squad, with wingers Jadon Sancho, Raheem Sterling, Jack Grealish and Bukayo Saka also receiving call ups.

Speaking to BuzzBingo, Winterburn says it isn’t something Greenwood should be concerned about as he believes the Manchester United forward will be involved heavily in the future.

“I think a few people were surprised to not see him involved and I don't really know the reason why he wasn't because he’s been in great form.

“I'm sure Gareth Southgate will have his reasons, but it is surprising to not see him in the squad.”

“There's a lot of excitement around Greenwood at Manchester United and the potential he has to develop into a great player. If his progression continues then we'll see a lot of him, not only at Manchester United but for England as well.”

Southgate explained at the time that he wanted to take a personal involvement in Greenwood's development at international level and believed that for now he was best off staying with his club during this break.

Greenwood instead lined up for Man United in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Stoke, where he got on the scoresheet again in a 4-3 defeat.
