Arsenal legend says Rangers can get closer to Celtic under Steven Gerrard

Patrick Vieira has backed Steven Gerrard to make Rangers successful again.

Vieira enjoyed many tussles with Gerrard during ther playing days, with the two midfielders becoming club legends for Arsenal and Liverpool respectively.

The Frenchman now manages Nice, and looked on last night as Gerrard's side won 2-0 to clinch the Veolia Trophy.

As the Ibrox side prepared to return home, an impressed Vieira said he expects Rangers to challenge Celtic this season.

As quoted in the Scottish Sun, Vieira said: "I think what Steven has done in the last couple of years shows that he's about to bring success back to Glasgow Rangers.

"He has great experience as a player and he's now building that as a manager.

"There's no doubt he will bring success.

"I think they will get close to Celtic this season and I know that's Stevie's target.

"He's building something really interesting at Rangers and the team is improving every year.

"I'm sure he'll do well and get closer to Celtic this year."

Rangers kick off their Premiership campaign on August 1 at Pittodrie against Aberdeen.
