Arsenal legend's dig at Granit Xhaka ahead of Switzerland vs Republic of Ireland

Arsenal legend Charlie Nicholas has taken a swipe about midfielder Granit Xhaka when making his predictions for the next batch of fixtures in the international break.

The Gunners captain has come under vast criticism during the past 18 months, coming to the forefront once again following the 1-1 draw with Manchester United.

Despite Unai Emery's side sitting third in the Premier League standings and a single point behind defending champions Manchester City, the performances from the North London side have often not been up to scratch.

The international break allows the Arsenal squad an opportunity to collect themselves before the return to domestic action last week - but Xhaka could not escape the digs of Nicholas.

"This is a tough place to go. The Swiss, even with Granit Xhaka in the team, are a formidable force, especially at home," he wrote for Sky Sports .

"They will be without Xherdan Shaqiri, but that should not cause too many issues - they are unbeaten in the qualifying stages and that is without Shaqiri."

Switzerland clash with the Republic of Ireland as they continue their quest to qualify for next summer's European Championship and Nicholas has backed the hosts for a 2-0 triumph.

The tie is crucial for the Swiss after a 1-0 defeat to Denmark, which leaves Switzerland four points behind Ireland - although they still have a game in hand.
