Arsenal legend Paul Merson stunned by controversial VAR decision in Crystal Palace vs Liverpool

James Tomkins thought he had put Crystal Palace ahead against Premier League leaders Liverpool at Selhurst Park on Saturday.

But the 42nd minute goal was ruled out by VAR.

Luka Milivojevic's free-kick from wide on the left was nodded on and headed home by Tomkins at the far post.

But VAR intervened and ruled the goal out for a foul in the build-up, with Jordan Ayew pushing Dejan Lovren as the ball came into the box.

Lovren would not have been able to head the ball away and would therefore not have impacted the scoring of the goal, but that did not matter to those assistant referees sitting in the VAR booth in Stockley Park.

Arsenal legend Paul Merson was watching the game for Sky Sports' Soccer Saturday and he could not believe what he was seeing.

When VAR kicked in, he said: "Seriously, I don't know what they're looking at.

"Someone's gone over, I don't know if they're looking at fouls, even the ref's embarrassed.

"Someone's gone over, oh there's a shove, I don't know, Lovren gets shoved by Ayew, Lovren gets pushed by Ayew, would he have headed it out? I don't know.

"Me I would still give it. He's disallowed it, I can't watch, this is ridiculous.

"Seriously he's nowhere near the ball, he can't get that! Look at that.

"Shall we give Liverpool the lead now?"
