Arsenal legend Paul Merson makes brilliant defence of Troy Deeney which Watford fans will love

Paul Merson has jumped to the defence of Watford striker Troy Deeney after his red card against Arsenal.

The Hornets skipper was sent off after elbowing Lucas Torreira during the clash at Vicarage Road - leaving Javi Gracia's side to see out the game with just 10 men.

His sending off proved costly as the Gunners ran out with a 1-0 victory, and Merson said that Watford had every right to appeal his three-game ban.

Speaking to Sky Sports, he said: "Does he get an extra game? No, then you might as well appeal it.

If you're not getting an extra game then you might as well appeal it. If that lad (Wayne Hennessey) is going in saying he doesn't know who Hitler is, he's got every chance.

"He could've said "I tickled him". If he (Deeney) was in after him, he could've got away with that."

Premier League transfer rumours: Man United to have 'no problem' signing Arsenal target

Merson's tongue-in-cheek comments came after Hennessey escaped punishment for an alleged 'Nazi salute'.

It was claimed by the Football Association Panel that the goalkeeper didn't know what the gesture was

The charge against the Crystal palace goalkeeper was not proven meaning that the 32-year-old will not be punished.

In a published document by the regulatory commission, it says that two members of the three-man panel believe that the photograph had been 'misinterpreted'.

Hennessey denied the charge, calling the resemblance to the Nazi gesture 'absolutely coincidental'.
