Arsenal legend names the one player Unai Emery must build his team around in 2019/2020

Former Arsenal midfielder Ray Parlour has called on Mesut Ozil to show more consistency in the upcoming campaign.

The ex-Germany international has received plenty of criticism from Gunners fans for his performances last season, with many believing the north London outfit should look to offload their highest earner in this summer's transfer window.

But Parlour, who is a Gunners legend from time with the club, believes boss Unai Emery should be looking to build his side around the World Cup winner.

"Well we know he’s a quality player,” Parlour told ESPN FC.

"He’s played in a World Cup, won the World Cup final.

"But consistency is the most important thing for a footballer. You want to see him getting a seven or eight out of 10 every week.

"You’ve got to build a team around him. I’m sure that Emery will be looking at how you play Mesut Ozil.

"I thought he put a lot of effort in the other night against Bayern Munich and that’s what we need to see every week.

"If he can do that, we all know he’s a very good player."

Parlour has also backed two of the younger members of the Gunners squad to stake a claim for a regular first-team spot this season.

Both Eddie Nketiah and Joe Willock have featured for Emery's side in pre-season, and Parlour believes the pair as well as Reiss Nelson have both produced performances that could put pressure on the Spaniard heading into the new season.

"Joe Willock, young midfielder, has come into the team and he might have an opportunity this year," Parlour added.

"So it’s a real opportunity for the young players, Reiss Nelson, Joe Willock, to put pressure on the manager to maybe put them into the starting line-up."
