Arsenal legend Ian Wright on 'iconic' bruised banana shirt and the inspiration behind kit launch

Arsenal legend Ian Wright as spoken about how pulling on the red and white shirt of Arsenal can inspire the players when out on the pitch.

Wright was a major part of the club's launch for the 2019/20 kits, starring in the 'this is home' video that went viral online.

The former Crystal Palace man has revealed that he couldn't wait to wear the kit after joining the club in 1991, although there was also another shirt that he enjoyed wearing too.

“When I signed for Arsenal from Palace I was just desperate to play in the kit. Up until that point I hadn’t played in anything near Adidas. I think it was Bukta and Admiral," he told the South China Morning Post .

“I was desperate to play in the Arsenal red and white but I didn’t get to play in it for three games. I played in that bruised banana one, which for me is the iconic kit."

Although the away kit is yet to be released by the club, it is understood that the club are returning to the iconic 'bruised banana' colour. Fans don't have long to find out for definite though, as reported by fooball.london , the shirt will be released on Monday July 15th.

It is often said that pulling on an iconic shirt can help individuals to perform on the pitch, and while Wright feels that it does help, he also emphasises that performances are down to the players.

“Can it inspire the players? It meant a lot to me when you put on a kit and how it felt," he added. "It makes you feel better but at the same time you do need to perform a lot better than we did last season, especially away from home.”

The video used to promote the new home kit has been a huge success, and Wright has explained why he feels it has been such a big hit.

“When you start supporting Arsenal then as far as Arsenal are concerned you’re a Londoner," he said. "I think they captured that pretty well and I think they captured the area, what it’s like for people to watch and see what it’s like on a match day and what it means to people. I think they nailed it. I’m just pleased to be in it.

“The respect it pays to my dear friend David Rocastle, Tony Adams gets a little cameo. It was brilliantly done.”
